  3. These 4 Men Are Most Cited in Online Searches About the Antichrist – Here’s What the ****** Says These 4 Men Are Most Cited in Online Searches About the Antichrist – Here’s What the ****** Says COMMENTARY What do Donald Trump, Elon Musk, King Charles III, and Emmanuel Macron all have in common? Beyond their obvious similarities as wealthy, famous men who command global attention, these individuals share another fascinating distinction: They are the most frequently cited candidates in recent online searches and discussions about the identity of the Antichrist. This phenomenon of trying to identify the Antichrist isn’t new. Throughout history, many have attempted to match contemporary figures to biblical prophecies about this future world leader. In the 20th century alone, figures as diverse as Mussolini, Hitler, Stalin and various popes were suggested as candidates. While such speculation can be intriguing, it’s essential to ground our understanding in Scripture’s actual criteria for identifying the Antichrist. The ****** provides specific characteristics that will identify this figure. These can be divided into two categories: those characteristics that will be observable before his full revelation as the Antichrist, and characteristics that will only become evident afterward. There’s also one pivotal event that will confirm his identity conclusively. Before the Antichrist’s revelation, we would expect to see several key indicators. First among them is his emergence as a charismatic world leader with exceptional intelligence and persuasive speaking abilities. Secondly, the Antichrist will play an initial role as a peacemaker (particularly regarding Israel). Thirdly, he will possess some connection to the former Roman Empire. Fourth, he will have a notable rise from relative obscurity to power. Finally, he must be male, as Scripture constantly uses masculine pronouns to describe him. These preliminary criteria help explain why certain leaders frequently appear in internet searches and general speculation. Take Emmanuel Macron, for instance. As France’s youngest-ever president, his rapid rise to power and charismatic leadership style check several boxes. His role in European politics, particularly his vision for a ten-nation European military coalition, has caught the attention of prophecy watchers. His background in economics and digital affairs might seem relevant to future global economic control. Some even point to his name — Emmanuel, meaning “God with us” — as potentially significant, given that the Antichrist will ultimately demand worship as God. Yet while these parallels are interesting, some or all of these criteria could apply to numerous other world leaders as well. ***Please sign up for CBN Newsletters and download the CBN News app to ensure you keep receiving the latest news from a distinctly Christian perspective.***   Similar connections could be drawn to other figures on our initial list. Some point to Mark Zuckerberg’s influence over global communications and digital currency initiatives or Bill Gates’ involvement in global health policy and technological innovation. Others highlight Jared Kushner’s role in Middle East peace negotiations or King Charles III’s position as head of the Church of England. Yet we can’t be certain that any of these individuals fully match the biblical criteria, particularly because of those characteristics that will only become evident after the Antichrist’s revelation. The true Antichrist’s identity will be confirmed by one pivotal event: the confirmation and later breaking of a seven-year peace covenant for Israel. This agreement’s violation at the midpoint of the seven-year Tribulation will mark the beginning of his unveiled reign of terror. After the determining event, eight additional criteria will become apparent: He will implement global economic control. He will assert authority over a ten-nation confederation. He will possess unique personal characteristics as well – including a disinterest in women. He will demand worship, persecute Christian believers, enjoy extraordinary military success, even suffer death or a mortal wound and be resurrected. And the Antichrist will, of course, express open and thorough contempt for religion – particularly Judaism and Christianity. Looking at today’s world leaders through this biblical lens helps us understand why not everyone can be the Antichrist while simultaneously showing how many could potentially fit the initial criteria. The full picture of this figure includes elements that haven’t occurred yet. This brings us to a crucial point: True believers living before God recalls them to Heaven won’t know the Antichrist’s identity with certainty. The apostle Paul says in 2 Thessalonians 2:7–8 that believers will be caught up with the Lord before that happens. However, this doesn’t mean Christians should be disinterested in the signs of his coming. We’re already witnessing the development of systems that could enable his future control: digital currencies, surveillance technology, and increasingly centralized global governance structures among them. Rather than focusing on identifying specific individuals as the Antichrist, Christians should look to recognize the spirit of antichrist already at work in our world. This spirit manifests in opposition to God’s truth, denial of Christ’s deity, and the promotion of false worship. While we may not know who the Antichrist will be, we can discern and resist the antichrist spirit in our current age. The fascination with identifying the Antichrist reveals more about our human nature than about prophetic fulfillment. We’re drawn to solving mysteries and finding patterns. Yet Scripture’s detailed criteria remind us that God has already provided all we need to know for this season. Our role isn’t to unmask the Antichrist but to remain faithful to Christ, alert to the times, and ready for His return. When we see global leaders rising to prominence or systems developing that could facilitate the Antichrist’s future reign, these should serve not as solving pieces to a prophetic puzzle, but as reminders to strengthen our faith and share the gospel while there is still time. After all, the story isn’t ultimately about the Antichrist – it’s about Christ’s final victory and the establishment of His eternal Kingdom. 4. How to Capture a Creature With an Ancient Wyvern Coin in Monster Hunter Wilds How to Capture a Creature With an Ancient Wyvern Coin in Monster Hunter Wilds · · February 27, 2025 Monster Hunter Wilds features a silver trophy/achievement that requires the player to “caught a creature that bears an ancient wyvern coin.” For this, we need to capture an Curioshell Crab. Where to find the creature holding the ancient wyvern coin The Curioshell Crab has multiple spawn points in the game. The earliest one is in the Plains. Go to area 13 (Oasis). Near it, you will find a hole that resembles a cave entrance: Descend through it and proceed until you reach a open area. Your Palico will say: “That creature is carrying something?”, this is your cue to use the Capture Net and catch the creature. Aim precisely so you don’t miss. If you take too long, the creature will disappear. I did several tests and, in all of them, the crab’s spawn was fixed. It takes a while to reappear but it will always appear in the same area! The description of the Curioshell Crab says the following: “Crabs that have retained their ancient appearance and are ******* than their standard brethren. They flee at full speed the instant they spot a foe, not bothering to camouflage themselves. Instead, they heap metal objects onto their carapaces, which are thought to be artifacts from ancient civilizations.“ The Curioshell Crab isn’t the only creature you can capture in Monster Hunter Wilds. The game has more than 50 endemic creatures, including the rare Sandstar (check out our guide for it here). You can also use the fishing pole to catch whoppers, giant fishes. You can read our guide for whoppers here. Did you managed to capture the creature holding the coin in Monster Hunter Wilds? Tell us in the comments and join the discussion in our forum! 8. How much has the US given to Ukraine? How much has the US given to Ukraine? Nick Eardley BBC Verify correspondent Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump discussed support for Ukraine Support for Ukraine has become a key issue since Donald Trump returned to the White House. President Trump has made a number of claims about how much the United States has spent compared to European countries. But some of his claims are questionable – with no evidence to back them up. Has the United States spent $300-$350bn on Ukraine aid? President Trump has made this claim on a number of occasions – including when he hosted France’s President Macron in the White House this week. Short answer: Figures suggest the actual spend is much lower. BBC Verify can find no evidence to back up the claim. There are different calculations on US spending in or related to Ukraine – and they produce a much lower figure. The Kiel Institute is a *******-based think tank tracking support going into Ukraine. It calculated that the United States spent $119.7bn (£94.3bn) on aid between January 2022 and December 2024. Others have reached a higher figure – but with a broader definition of what counts as spending on Ukraine. The US Department of Defense has provided a figure looking at all spending on Operation Atlantic Resolve – a response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It says $182.8bn has been “appropriated” – a figure that covers US military training in Europe and replenishment of US defence stocks. Either way, both figures are considerably lower than claimed by the president. We asked the White House about the basis for the $350bn claim. So far, it hasn’t provided an explanation. Has the United States spent $200bn more than Europe? President Trump has claimed: “We’ve spent more than $300bn and Europe has spent about $100bn – that’s a big difference” Short answer: Figures suggest Europe has spent more when all aid is included and, as above, we can’t find any evidence for the $300bn figure. The United States is, by some margin, the largest single donor to Ukraine. But Europe combined has spent more money than the United States, according to the Kiel Institute. The figure includes aid directly from the European Union, but also from bilateral deals from European countries, both inside and outside the EU. It includes military, financial and humanitarian aid. They calculate that between 24 January 2022 and the end of 2024, Europe as a whole spent $138.7bn on Ukraine. In the same *******, the United States spent $119.7bn, according to their figures. NATO secretary general Mark Rutte made a similar argument, adding Canada into his calculation. Mr Rutte said February 2025: “In 2024, NATO Allies provided over 50 billion euros in security assistance to Ukraine – nearly 60% of this coming from Europe and Canada.” We asked for NATO’s figures, but they said they were classified. Will Europe get its money back while the United States doesn’t? This is a claim President Trump made when he hosted President Macron. It prompted President Macron to disagree, saying both Europe and the US had given a mixture of grants and loans. Short answer: The EU has provided loans, but also grants. President Macron is correct, according to Kiel figures. But they suggest President Trump also has a point; the US has sent more grants, while the EU sent more loans. However, again, there are different figures out there. The European Union says EU countries have provided around $145bn in aid so far and that just 35% of that has been loans. Like the United States Department of Defence, the EU has used a broader definition of what counts as aid to Ukraine. EU loans will have been on generous terms – so Ukraine will be repaying less interest than it would normally. In some cases, Ukraine isn’t expected to pay anything, with repayments coming from revenues from frozen Russian assets. What we can say is that aid to Ukraine has been a mixture of loans and grants. How much has the *** given to Ukraine The *** is one of the biggest individual state donors to Ukraine. The only countries to have spent more are the United States and Germany, according to Kiel data. But the *** contributions are much smaller than the United States. That raises a question for the *** and other European countries; if the United States withdraws a large part of its funding to Ukraine, can other states make up the difference? That would require a significant increase in their contributions. 9. Twitch Is Making Big Changes To Its Monetization Policies In 2025 Twitch Is Making Big Changes To Its Monetization Policies In 2025 Streaming platform Twitch has announced a big change to its monetization policy, as “most streamers” will soon gain access to the site’s monetization tools. Previously, only Twitch affiliates and partners could access these revenue-generating tool, but these will be available to more creators later in 2025. “We want you to be able to take advantage of our monetization tools, whether you’re just getting your community started, or have been on Twitch for a while,” Twitch CEO Dan Clancy wrote in a blog post. “We’re excited to open up monetization tools–subscriptions and bits–to most streamers, from day one. This will allow creators, regardless of their status, to grow their communities and start building earnings through direct patronage. We’re also introducing an option, which will allow all streamers to use their earnings on purchases within Twitch.” Previously, earning a Twitch partnership required a user to have 50 followers, an average of three viewers per stream, and at least eight hours of cumulative streaming across at least seven different days. That process could be daunting for new streamers given the competitive nature of Twitch, but it was generally achievable if a person was consistent with their efforts. Beyond this big change, Clancy also explained other plans for Twitch in 2025. The company is working on features to help partners earn more money while collaborating, both landscape and vertical video through enhanced broadcasting tools will be added to improve the mobile viewing experience, and the tools to edit clips will also be improved. These updates come shortly after Twitch announced that it’ll be implementing a 100-hour storage cap on highlights and uploads starting April 19, a move that has not gone over well with a large part of its userbase. While the company cites a need to save on storage costs and video highlights not being as popular as it envisioned as reasons behind the move, users have noted that Twitch’s parent company Amazon is one of the biggest names in cloud storage, leading to criticism of the cost-cutting measure. 11. Pokemon Day Reveals New Champions Game, Z-A Starters Pokemon Day Reveals New Champions Game, Z-A Starters Each year brings a new Pokemon Day filled with exciting announcements, and 2025 is no exception. This year, fans finally got a look at Pokemon Legends: Z-A, which was announced during last year’s Pokemon Day presentation then followed up by radio silence. But it’s not just Legends: Z-A news, including the first look at its starter Pokemon, that got revealed: a new game, Pokemon Champions, was also announced, and it may be a real game-changer for competitive play moving forward. In the 2025 Pokemon Day Presents livestream, which lasted just under 20 minutes, fans got to learn about upcoming events and updates for a variety of Pokemon games, including the physical TCG and TCG Pocket, Pokemon UNITE, Pokemon Cafe ReMix, Pokemon Masters EX, and even Pokemon Sleep. But in the midst of these announcements was the reveal of an all-new title, Pokemon Champions. The Champions trailer focuses on the series’s history of players battling together, both in the mainline games as well as in battle-focused spin-offs such as Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon Battle Revolution. Pokemon Champions seems to follow in the latters’ footsteps, as two players battle against each other in a VGC-style double battle. The trailer, as well as the follow-up information in the longer presentation, confirm that Champions will include cross-play, with players able to battle using their Switch (and likely the upcoming Switch 2) or their mobile device. The most interesting detail, however, is the in-game battle showcasing a Terastalized Dondozo squared off against a Mega Charizard X, combining two battle “gimmicks” that are normally not in the same games. What this means for the future of official competitive play has yet to be seen, but if Champions becomes the default game for VGC play and influences VGC’s regulations, we may be in for some interesting match-ups in the future. At the end of the presentation, fans finally got a glimpse at Legends: Z-A. The game takes place some unknown amount of time after X and Y, and exclusively in Lumiose City. The city is being redeveloped, and is split into boroughs or wards, each with their own “wild area.” Within these wild areas, which are comparable to the zones in Legends: Arceus, players can battle and capture wild Pokemon. Also at long last, the game’s three starters Pokemon were confirmed to be Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile. While it’s unclear if their evolutions will receive regional variants like in Legends: Arceus or Mega Evolutions, Meganium and Emboar are two of the Pokemon we most hope to get a regional variant. Fans can also glimpse in the trailer Chikorita with the Fairy-type move Disarming Voice, a move it previously couldn’t learn. This may hint at a Fairy-type Meganium or Mega Meganium down the line, although anything is possible at this point. Fairy-type or not, we’re excited to get to revisit Lumiose City in Legends: Z-A “in late 2025,” as the presentation confirms. Prima Games is supported by our audience. 12. A new split-screen feature is coming to Google Chrome, and it’s surprisingly powerful A new split-screen feature is coming to Google Chrome, and it’s surprisingly powerful A Google Chrome Canary beta build has revealed a new split-screen feature It’s been updated twice and renamed since it was first discovered It’s not available to the public yet, but is expected to release soon The latest beta build of Google Chrome features brand-new split-screen functionality. This feature lets you use two windows in a single tab and even dynamically change the size of the windows for enhanced productivity. Uncovered by X user Leopeva64, the new Google Chrome split-screen feature appears to be now known as “Show side-by-side”. However, it was first available in the drop-down menu as “Split tab with active tab”. Naming conventions aside, the functionality is identical between the two beta updates; you can merge two windows in the browser under one larger tab, and then you’re able to resize the two sides, which means you won’t have to manually drag two windows snapped together or swap tabs out. While confirmed to not be fully functional yet, plans are in place for the handle (space between the tabs) to be resizable as well. With a larger dividing gap, you can better separate the two tabs or minimize the gap completely for a seamless encompassing window. The functionality is not live yet for regular users in Google Chrome, as it’s currently only available in a Chrome Canary test build. Considering it’s already been updated twice since it was discovered earlier in the month, there’s no telling how it will perform when it’s eventually rolled out in an update for everyone. Despite how demanding Google Chrome can be on your RAM and CPU, there’s no debating that it’s one of the best web browsers you can use in 2025. This new split-screen tool is a smaller update than what we’ve traditionally seen rolled out, but it is something that could be a productivity powerhouse for those studying and working and needing web access. It sounds particularly good for laptop users or people working with a smaller computer monitor, as there will be no need to awkwardly try to snap multiple windows together in a cramped space. Similarly, with adjustable scaling to each tab, all under one umbrella. If you’re someone doing research and you need the source larger than where you’re writing, that can be easily done, and vice versa. It’s another step in improving the speed and customization of Chrome as a web browser at a time when more users are demanding more functionality or going elsewhere. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. Google Chrome Canary is a beta build of the web browser aimed at developers that is updated every single night. While it can be unstable, it provides insights into new features and improvements long before they arrive to the rest of the users (if they show up at all). Things are tested automatically, and usually not too extensively, so it’s a chance to play around with things that may or may not always work. Recent Chrome updates have included long-term security features for ChromeOS, and stability updates for desktops, iOS, and Android. Previously, in October 2024, Google released performance controls for the web browser so you could make it run faster or more efficiently. In the same month, the company made its plans known to crack down on ad blockers and other unauthorized extensions on its web store. 14. Framework Desktop’s Noctua fan and Cooler Master heatsink pried off, Strix Halo exposed Framework Desktop’s Noctua fan and Cooler Master heatsink pried off, Strix Halo exposed When Framework debuted its Desktop earlier this week, most attendees of its San Francisco event didn’t get to tear the machine all the way down to the studs. There’s an exception, however: iFixit posted a full teardown of the 4.5L Mini-ITX machine, removing the cooler and showing off the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395, also known as Strix Halo. Teardown tech Shahram Mokhtari removed the four Phillips screws to free the large cooler (co-engineered by Framework, Cooler Master, and Noctua) to reveal the die shot everyone was waiting for. (You can see it around 8:38 in the embedded video). Modular, Open, Repairable – The Framework Desktop Teardown! – YouTube Watch On Strix Halo hasn’t changed; we’ve seen the die shots before. But here, we do see that the massive, seemingly custom cooling solution is a unit that covers both the processor and the RAM, which is soldered to the motherboard. Framework CEO Nirav Patel wrote in a blog that Framework “spent months working with AMD to explore ways around this but ultimately determined that it wasn’t technically feasible to land modular memory at high throughput with the 256-bit memory bus.” To cool the chip and RAM, Framework isn’t using a standard desktop CPU cooler. It attaches to a 120 mm fan; you can pick from options from Cooler Master or Noctua, or pick your own. This is an engineering board, so it’s possible changes will come to the final product, but it seems unlikely that there will be an option for someone to put Strix Halo under water cooling (but if you figure it out, get in touch). Mokhtari was able to remove the board after opening the case and removing the front and side panels. He removed the fan from the cooler first and unplugged the board. He did, however, have to unscrew more of the case than expected, possibly due to this unit being an engineering sample. The Flex ATX PSU stayed in the case the whole time. The Framework desktop is available for pre-order now and is set to release in Q3 of this year. The base model, with a Ryzen AI Max 385 and 32GB of RAM, starts at $1,099, while the top-end machine with a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 128GB of RAM begins at $1,999. Framework is only doing “DIY” editions here, so you’ll have to get your own storage drive and bring your own operating system (the company is calling it “the easiest PC you’ll ever build”). The mainboard on its own will be available from $799. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. 17. Marvel Rivals Needs an Assassin’s Creed-Inspired Parkour Game Mode Marvel Rivals Needs an Assassin’s Creed-Inspired Parkour Game Mode When Marvel Rivals hit the gaming scene, it disrupted the industry in a way very few titles have done before. The game not only showcased that the hero-shooter genre is far from dead, but it also redefined the expectations of players and studios alike. The game has captured the players’ attention since its launch. | Image Credit: NetEase Games With its diverse roster of iconic Marvel heroes, the game offers an incredible opportunity for expansion, especially in creating unique gameplay modes that push beyond traditional combat. One such game mode could be a parkour-inspired experience, similar to Assassin’s Creed. Marvel Rivals has huge potential for diverse game modes A stealth mode would showcase different sides of the heroes. | Image Credit: NetEase Marvel Rivals has proven it can deliver fast-paced and thrilling action, but it has the potential to become much more than just another hero-shooter. Just like how Fortnite transformed from a basic battle royale into a game with an expansive array of diverse modes, Rivals could open up new gameplay possibilities through innovative game modes. By embracing its superhero roots, the game could explore different mechanics that not only enhance the experience but also show players how the hero’s abilities have more usability. So, why particularly an Assassin’s Creed-inspired parkour mode? The answer lies in the combination of stealth, mobility, and character uniqueness. The AC series is known for its complex characters, and gripping narratives, but what set it apart from other titles is its tactical stealth mechanics. Imagine if Marvel Rivals applied these principles and enhanced not just combat, but also mobility. Heroes like ****** Panther, Spider-Man, Venom, and ****** Widow are perfect candidates for a parkour mode, as they already have abilities that allow them extra traversal. This mode would allow players to experience their heroes in a completely new light, focusing on agility and movement, not just the raw combat prowess their abilities provide. A parkour mode fit for Marvel Rivals The game should offer a variety of game modes. | Image Credit: NetEase Games Introducing an Assassin’s Creed-inspired parkour mode in Marvel Rivals would revolutionize how players interact with the game. The focus would shift from traditional combat to a unique mix of agility, stealth, and objectives that take full advantage of parkour-based mechanics. Players could race against time, complete objectives, or even pursue and escape opponents using their unique abilities. This would allow heroes to shine in ways they never have before. For example, ****** Panther could perform wall-running and quick vaults, Spider-Man could swing across tall buildings (which he already does), and ****** Widow could use her techniques of takedown (Assassin’s Creed Style), as we have seen in MCU. This parkour mode could even feature scenarios like hostage situations, where heroes must act quickly and stealthily to save civilians, think Die Hard, but with superheroes. Just imagine blending Assassin’s Creed’s stealth mechanics with Marvel’s diverse characters and abilities, it opens the door for endless possibilities. In a PvP mode, players could engage in free-running assassinations where speed and terrain mastery are just as crucial as combat. In the end, the sky’s the limit when heroes are free to traverse the environment with the fluidity of parkour. It’s time for Marvel Rivals to take its gameplay to new heights. 18. Champ Burmester makes solid start in South African Open Champ Burmester makes solid start in South African Open Home favourite Dean Burmester was left chasing his rivals despite making a solid opening to the defence of his South African Open title in Durban. The start of the famous old tournament had been delayed by three hours on Thursday after heavy rain on Tuesday night led to areas of the course in Durban being submerged. But after an impressive effort from greenkeeping staff saw play get under way at 9:20am local time, morning starters, England’s Sam Bairstow and Sweden’s Fredrik From shot 65s to share the lead with South African Darren Fichardt on seven under par at the end of the day. Fichardt, who shot seven birdies and no bogeys in his first 14 holes before the suspension, will return to complete his round when play restarts at 8am on Friday. Burmester was four shots off the lead but made a decent start to the defence of the crown he won two years ago – there was no event last year – with a three-under-par 69, which left him tied for 28th. 23. Raspberry Pi 5 powers retro-futurism 1980s cyberdeck with custom milled keypad and wood finish Raspberry Pi 5 powers retro-futurism 1980s cyberdeck with custom milled keypad and wood finish There’s nothing like a custom handheld cyberdeck and this Raspberry Pi handheld is a shining example of how far you can take customization as a maker. Nicholas LaBonte recently shared a detailed post showing off his awesome Raspberry Pi 5-powered handheld SDR Cyberdeck and it’s absolutely gorgeous. According to LaBonte, this project was inspired by other projects like the uConsole. However, LaBonte was determined to build his own from scratch using both readily available components and custom materials like hardwoods used for finishing yacht interiors. The aesthetic is very 1980s tech, with dark plastics, rich red and gleaming metal. One of the coolest aspects of this build, in our opinion at least, is the custom keyboard. LaBonte went so far as to mill the individual keys used in the keypad and it looks fantastic. LaBonte explained that the custom keyboard, while amazing, was one of the most daunting hurdles in its creation. The process involved not just building the keys from the ground up but also creating a custom PCB that connects to a series of microswitches. The end result is an extremely professional looking finish that works great for input, as well. Image 1 of 3 (Image credit: Nicholas LaBonte) (Image credit: Nicholas LaBonte) (Image credit: Nicholas LaBonte) This cyberdeck features an SDR antenna which, if you’re not familiar, stands for software defined radio. It’s an optional asset that can be attached or removed as needed. The handheld features a display panel with a resolution of 800 x 480px. It’s housed behind a faceplate that LaBonte designed digitally using Fusion360 just for this project. For cursor control, LaBonte is using a red PSP analog joystick. To keep the unit portable, LaBonte has fitted the unit with an internal UPS which can last for up to 5 hours as tested by watching YouTube videos nonstop. The unit can run a bit warm and is kept cool using a bronze heatsink. Software-wise, you can use any OS you want as long as you can fix it up with the QMK firmware needed to operate the keyboard and cursor input from the PSP joystick module. If you want to get a closer look at this Raspberry Pi project, you’re in luck. LaBonte shared plenty of details in the build guide and showed off the creation in a video shared to YouTube. There you can follow him for more cool projects as well as any future updates to this one. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. 25. ‘Positive steps’ in redress for Post Office Capture victims ‘Positive steps’ in redress for Post Office Capture victims The law firm representing 100 former subpostmasters who suffered the life-changing effects of being blamed for unexplained shortfalls on the computer system used in their branches before the Post Office rolled out the Horizon IT system, said there have been “positive steps” towards fair redress. Former users of the Post Office’s Capture software, like those that had the controversial Horizon system, were blamed for losses, made to pay them back and even prosecuted by the Post Office. In the latest meeting between the Department of Business and Trade and former Capture users – held as part of the government’s plan to offer financial redress – there were positive signs, according to lawyer Neil Hudgell, of Hudgell Solicitors. “Obviously, everything needs ministerial sign-off and approval, but, quite rightly, there is a clear willingness to do right by those who have suffered at the hands of the Post Office in relation to Capture,” he said. He added that there was also progress on having convictions reviewed by the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC). “We’ve spoken with the CCRC today and those cases are moving forward, though of course there is a lot of work to be done in terms of securing further information required,” said Hudgell. The controversy over the Capture system emerged in January last year after the ITV drama Mr Bates vs the Post Office told the stories of subpostmasters that had suffered at the hands of the Horizon system. It was the same month that Kevan Jones, an MP at the time who now sits in the House of Lords, highlighted evidence of injustices caused by the Capture computer system used in Post Office branches prior to the introduction of Horizon. Echoes of Horizon Jones had visited a subpostmaster who he thought may be a victim of Horizon, but when he realised the dates involved, it became clear another system could be at fault. Since the drama put the scandal at the centre of national debate, successive governments have been forced to act. In May 2024, the former Conservative government introduced legislation to exonerate about 900 former Horizon users who were convicted based on evidence from Fujitsu’s faulty system. Now the CCRC is reviewing 21 cases of potential wrongful conviction put forward by Hudgells, where Capture could be a factor. This is an increase from 17 just weeks ago and from five in November last year. Capture was a PC-based application developed by the Post Office and uploaded onto a personal computer to carry out branch accounts. The software was a standalone system, unlike Horizon, which is a complex, networked system connected to centralised services. One of the subpostmasters who came forward after the ITV dramatisation was Steve Marston. He had a branch in Bury, Lancashire, and was prosecuted in 1996 for theft and false accounting following an unexplained shortfall of nearly £80,000. Marston said he never had any problems using the paper-based accounting system until his branch, which he ran from 1973, began using Capture. After an audit revealed a loss which he couldn’t fully cover out of his own pocket, he was advised to plead guilty of theft and fraud to avoid jail. The judge took into account two bravery awards Marston had received for standing up to armed robbers, saving him a jail sentence. He received a 12-month suspended sentence, lost his home and business, and went bankrupt. Another life-destroying case is that of Steve Lewis from South Wales, who had worked for the Post Office since 1983, originally as a counter clerk, and was a Post Office auditor for a number of years. When he suffered unexplained losses, he was told by the Post Office that he was an isolated case. He lost his business, had to sell his home and suffered mental health issues, with related relationship troubles. More cases come forward Thousands of subpostmasters used Capture and more and more cases with glaring similarities to those related to Horizon are coming to light. A Kent subpostmistress who was convicted of theft from her branch in the 1990s is one of a new wave whose families are fighting to clear their names. Patricia Owen was convicted in 1998 of theft from her Post Office branch in Canterbury, over a shortfall of £6,000. Hers is one of the 21 cases Hudgell Solicitors have put forward to the CCRC. Owen, who died in 2003, denied the charges against her but was found guilty on five counts of theft. She received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. Owen’s daughter Juliet said: “I remember them sitting us down and telling us that mum was being prosecuted and that they had to go to court. We managed to get an independent computer expert to look over everything and he said there were malfunctions with the software, so we were hopeful ahead of the court case. The expert didn’t turn up on the day, and we never found out why.” Peter Lloyd-Holt, who died aged 75 in 2021, was sacked in 1994 from his role as a subpostmaster in Bolton after accounts at his branch showed unexplained shortfalls. His wife Agnes, who worked as an investigator for the Department of Work and Pensions at the time he was sacked, said life was never the same. “That was the beginning of the end,” she said. “He was interviewed under caution without representation. I was contacted but not allowed to attend. He was eventually told in March 1995 that he wasn’t going to be prosecuted, but he was still held responsible for the shortfalls and we were made to pay back a considerable sum. “I had to work overtime to pay the mortgage and to pay back what the Post Office alleged we owed them, and that meant we suffered financial hardship as there had to be cut backs,” she added. Lloyd-Holt’s son, Paul, said: “What happened to my father destroyed him. When my dad was interviewed he submitted all his documentation and evidence to clear his name, ledgers and dockets and spreadsheets, but they were never returned, so there is little evidence available to us to clear his name. “Any evidence like bank statements have been lost over time, so we need the support of the solicitors to do this. He never could move on though, it always cast a shadow over his life, and our lives as a family. Now, we’re in a position where we only have our own memories, and we are having to contact many organisations and bodies to see what extra evidence we can uncover.” The Post Office Horizon scandal was first exposed by Computer Weekly in 2009, revealing the stories of seven subpostmasters and the problems they suffered due to accounting software.
