‘This is not normal’: Acts of protest at Donald Trump’s address – National ‘This is not normal’: Acts of protest at Donald Trump’s address – National U.S. President Donald Trump was forced to weather numerous interruptions from his political opponents during his lengthy 100-minute joint address to Congress on Tuesday night. Since taking office 44 days ago, Trump has doubled down on his promise to strip back diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, has attempted to freeze government subsidies to major health care service providers such as Medicaid and moved to dismantle the Department of Education. In addition, he has tried to halt funding to international aid programs such as USAID, has banned transgender troops from the military and slammed Canada, Mexico and China with sweeping tariffs, prompting a trade war that experts warn will likely result in widespread economic turmoil. Trump began his speech by briefly addressing the newly instated levies. “Tariffs will make America great again, and it’s happening and it will happen rather quickly,” he assured Congress, adding that there will be “a little disturbance,” at first. Story continues below advertisement Wall Street reported a plummet in global stocks on Tuesday as tariffs came into effect. In light of his recent actions and claims, Democrats took it upon themselves to stand up to the president and his party. Here’s a breakdown of the protests. Al Green fights health care cuts During the opening minutes of Trump’s address, Rep. Al Green, a Texas Democrat, stood and argued that Trump did not have a mandate to cut social safety net funding. Green was told by House Speaker Mike Johnson “to cease any further disruptions” before being warned of his imminent removal. Green’s attempt to be heard was drowned out by Republican party members yelling at him to “sit down,” followed by a loud applause as Johnson reminded all in attendance of their responsibility to maintain “decorum.” The incident ended in Green being escorted from the chamber by the House Sergeant at Arms. Green told reporters afterward: “It’s worth it to let people know that there are some of us who are going to stand up against this president’s desire to cut Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security.” Rep. Paddy Power High Court case: Gardener wins £1m payout Paddy Power High Court case: Gardener wins £1m payout Tess de la Mare BBC News, Gloucestershire PA Media Corrine Durber, with her husband Colin (left) and her solicitor Peter Coyle (right) outside the High Court A gardener who was told by Paddy Power her £1m jackpot from an online game was just a computer error has won a High Court case over her winnings. Corrine Durber, from Gloucestershire, played the Wild Hatter game in October 2020 – a two-part game involving a fruit machine and a wheel of fortune. After spinning the jackpot wheel, Mrs Durber’s iPad Screen displayed she had won the “Monster Jackpot”, which was stated as £1,097,132.71. But the gambling giant only paid out £20,265 telling her she had won the smaller “Daily Jackpot”, with the difference attributed to a programming error with the game’s display. Mrs Durber sued PPB Entertainment Limited, which trades as Paddy Power and Betfair, for breach of contract and for the rest of her winnings, based on what she was shown on screen. In a judgment on Wednesday, Mr Justice Ritchie granted summary judgment in her favour, meaning she won her case without a trial. He said: “When a trader puts all the risk on a consumer for its own recklessness, negligence, errors, inadequate digital services and inadequate testing, that appears onerous to me.” PA Media Corrine Durber said she would never bet with Paddy Power again PPB had said that the outcome was determined by a random number generator, which had said she had only won the daily jackpot, but an error affected the animations of the game and showed her the wrong result. Mr Justice Ritchie said that the idea of “what you see is what you get” was central to the game. He continued in a 62-page ruling: “Objectively, customers would want and expect that what was to be shown to them on screen to be accurate and correct. “The same expectation probably applies when customers go into a physical casino and play roulette. “They expect the house to pay out on the roulette wheel if they bet on number 13 and the ball lands on number 13.” The judge found that the result from the random number generator was different from the result on screen due to human error in mapping the software, which had affected 14 plays over 48 days. ‘Relieved and happy’ Mrs Durber said said she was “relieved and happy” that the judge has confirmed she won “fairly and squarely” £1m from Paddy Power. She added: “But why couldn’t Paddy Power pay-up straight away instead of putting me through this legal torment?” Following the ruling, a spokesperson for Paddy Power, said: “We always strive to provide the best customer experience possible and pride ourselves on fairness. “We deeply regret this unfortunate case and are reviewing the judgment.” Source link #Paddy #Power #High #Court #case #Gardener #wins #payout Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Congress’ proposed Medicaid cuts may negatively impact economy: report Congress’ proposed Medicaid cuts may negatively impact economy: report A “Save Medicaid” sign is affixed to the podium for the House Democrats’ press event to oppose the Republicans’ budget on the House steps of the Capitol on Tuesday, February 25, 2024. Bill Clark | Cq-roll Call, Inc. | Getty Images House Republicans have called for about $880 billion in spending cuts over the next decade that may target Medicaid, a program that provides health care and other services to millions of Americans. The budget resolution adopted by the chamber on Feb. 25 is aimed at implementing the cuts to help pay for renewing tax cuts expiring the end of this year. The House Energy and Commerce Committee is charged with finding the savings, and Medicaid is under its jurisdiction. Of note, the resolution doesn’t specifically single out Medicaid. “It is very hard to imagine coming up with enough savings from what’s in their jurisdiction without a hefty cut to Medicaid, just given its size,” said Josh Bivens, chief economist at the Economic Policy Institute. Republicans including House Speaker Mike Johnson have said they do not plan to cut Medicaid, in keeping with President Donald Trump’s promise not to touch the program. Neither the White House nor the Energy and Commerce Committee were immediately available for comment. More from Personal Finance: Americans are suffering from ‘sticker shock’ Canada, Mexico tariffs create ‘ripple effects’ on consumer prices As tariffs ramp up, this investment can protect against inflation Cuts to Medicaid would impact more than 80 million people who rely on the program for health insurance every month, including many individuals who are middle class, as well as older adults who use it for long-term care benefits, Bivens said. Because the program is the largest federal program for alleviating poverty, cutbacks would increase hardships for already struggling families, according to new research from the Economic Policy Institute. Moreover, Medicaid cuts of that size would also make the U.S. more vulnerable to a recession, according to the research. Cuts may have ‘noticeable effects’ on spending Implementing Medicaid spending cuts to extend tax breaks from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act would have “noticeable effects” on economywide spending, according to the Economic Policy Institute. Republicans and Democrats have opposing views on what the impact of extending those cuts may be. While Democrats say renewing the policy would benefit the wealthiest Americans, Republicans argue it could create a windfall for low- and middle-income Americans. Research from the Penn Wharton Budget Model and the Urban Institute has found high-income taxpayers would benefit most. High-income households would likely save the additional money they see from any tax cuts, and therefore not result in meaningful spending, EPI predicts. In contrast, individuals who are affected by the Medicaid cuts would reduce their medical spending, such as by skipping doctors’ visits, the EPI report found. For people with less generous Medicaid coverage, higher out-of-pocket costs would limit their ability to spend in other areas. A dollar cut to Medicaid generally has a much ******* macro effect than a dollar cut to taxes for high-income people, Bivens said. Because Medicaid beneficiaries are so income constrained, every extra dollar of funding that goes to Medicaid frees up money they can spend elsewhere, he said. Medicaid cuts curb their ability to spend. An $880 billion cut to Medicaid would prompt a 0.5% drag on economic growth, according to the Economic Policy Institute. That could nudge the unemployment rate up by about 0.3 percentage points, and leave about 550,000 people involuntarily without jobs. To counteract the slower economic growth, the Federal Reserve could lower interest rates from about 4.25% to around 2.5%, according to the Economic Policy Institute. But that would limit the central bank’s ability to react to any other recessionary shocks that could come up. Research from the Commonwealth Fund has found when Medicaid is expanded, additional federal funding can help promote stronger state economies. For states that implement expansions, that may boost state output, state gross products and personal incomes in those states, which also benefits the country at large, according to the research. Panama president accuses Trump of ‘lying again’ on ‘reclaiming’ Canal – National Panama president accuses Trump of ‘lying again’ on ‘reclaiming’ Canal – National Panama President José Raúl Mulino on Wednesday accused U.S. President Donald Trump of lying when he said in his address to Congress that his administration was “reclaiming” the Panama Canal. Trump was referencing a deal announced Tuesday for a consortium led by the U.S. investment management company BlackRock Inc. to buy a controlling stake in the company held by a ******** group that operates ports at both ends of the Panama Canal. Panama maintains that it has full control over the canal and that the Hong Kong-based group’s operation of the ports did not amount to ******** control over the waterway, and that therefore the ***** to a U.S.-based company would not represent any U.S. “reclaiming” of the canal. Panama’s government on Tuesday called the ***** a private transaction. Mulino in a message posted to X on Wednesday, rejected that the deal came about because of U.S. pressure. “I reject in the name of Panama and all Panamanians this new affront to the truth and our dignity as a nation,” he wrote. He accused Trump of “lying again.” Story continues below advertisement Trump has talked about retaking the Panama Canal since his campaign, arguing that the U.S. should have never turned control over to the Panamanians and that the U.S. was being overcharged for using it. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Mulino in early February and insisted that China was exerting influence over the canal’s operations. Story continues below advertisement The deal has to be approved by Panama’s government. The United States built the canal in the early 1900s as it looked for ways to facilitate the transit of commercial and military vessels between its coasts. Washington relinquished control of the waterway to Panama on Dec. 31, 1999, under a treaty signed in 1977 by President Jimmy Carter. Trump has claimed that Carter “foolishly” gave the canal away. Frank Sixt, co-managing director of CK Hutchison, said in a statement that the transaction was “the result of a rapid, discrete but competitive process in which numerous bids and expressions of interest were received.” “I would like to stress that the transaction is purely commercial in nature and wholly unrelated to recent political news reports concerning the Panama Ports,” Sixt said. Sth Sudan detain minister, officials in threat to peace Sth Sudan detain minister, officials in threat to peace South Sudanese forces have arrested the petroleum minister and several senior military officials allied with First Vice President Riek Machar, Machar’s spokesperson said, jeopardising a peace deal that ended a five-year civil war. The arrests on Wednesday follow intense fighting in recent weeks in the strategic northern town of Nasir between national forces and the White Army militia, a loosely-organised group mostly comprising armed Nuer, Machar’s ethnic group. The White Army fought alongside Machar’s forces in the 2013-2018 civil war that pitted them against predominantly ethnic Dinka troops loyal to President Salva Kiir. Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol, who hails from Nasir, and the deputy head of the army Gabriel Doup Lam were arrested, while all other senior military officials allied with Machar were placed under house arrest, said Machar’s spokesperson, Puok Both Baluang. “As of now, there’s not any reason provided to us that led to the arrest or the detention of (these) officials,” Baluang told Reuters. South Sudanese troops were also deployed around Machar’s residence, although he had been able to travel to his office on Wednesday morning, Baluang said. In the government’s first comments since the arrests, Information Minister Michael Makuei accused forces loyal to Machar of collaborating with the White Army and attacking a military garrison near Nasir town on Tuesday. Makuei did not comment on the detentions, but said Kiir had vowed that the country would not go back to war. “The government is in the process of addressing this situation and people should not panic or listen to unfounded and unrealistic wild rumours that are being spread by enemies of peace and stability,” Makuei said in a statement. South Sudan’s civil war, which erupted just two years after the country gained independence from Sudan, killed an estimated 400,000 people, drove 2.5 million from their homes and left almost half the nation’s 11 million citizens struggling to find enough food. A peace deal struck in 2018 has mostly avoided outright fighting between Kiir and Machar’s forces, though localised violence routinely flares up. Daniel Akech Thiong, senior analyst on South Sudan at the International Crisis Group, said the oil-rich country appeared to be on the brink of war, fuelled by increased access to weapons due to the conflict in neighbouring Sudan. “The fragile peace that has maintained a delicate balance among competing armed leaders since 2018 is at risk of collapsing,” he said. The war in Sudan has also disrupted South Sudan’s oil exports, which represented 90 per cent of its foreign exchange earnings. Earth’s Orbit and Tilt Linked to Ice Age Cycles, Next One Delayed by Climate Change Earth’s Orbit and Tilt Linked to Ice Age Cycles, Next One Delayed by Climate Change Shifts in Earth’s tilt and orbit have played a crucial role in the onset and end of ice ages over the past 800,000 years, researchers have found. A direct link between these changes and the movements of massive ice sheets has been identified, indicating that another ice age would have started within the next 11,000 years if not for the rising impact of greenhouse gas emissions. The study examined how Earth’s axial tilt and orbit influence long-term climate patterns, revealing a strong correlation between these factors and the expansion and retreat of ice sheets. Influence of Earth’s Tilt and Wobble on Climate According to the study published in Science, Earth’s axis is currently tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees. Over a cycle of approximately 41,000 years, this tilt fluctuates, affecting the amount of solar radiation reaching the poles. Another factor, Earth’s precession, refers to the wobble of its axis, which influences the intensity of sunlight in equatorial regions over a 21,000-year cycle. Both of these variations have been found to dictate the timing of ice ages. In an interview with Live Science, Stephen Barker, Professor of Earth Science at Cardiff University, explained that an “amazing correlation” was observed between Earth’s obliquity, precession, and ice sheet movements. The study tracked data from ocean sediment cores containing microscopic shells, known as forams, which provided insight into historical ice sheet coverage. Impact of Human Activity on Glaciation A timeline for the next glaciation phase was estimated based on natural climate cycles. If human activity were not a factor, ice sheets would start expanding within 10,000 to 11,000 years, reaching their peak over the next 80,000 to 90,000 years before gradually retreating. However, carbon dioxide levels continue to rise, disrupting these natural cycles. Barker noted that sustained high CO2 levels would prevent a new glacial ******* from occurring. The findings contribute to a broader understanding of Earth’s long-term climate changes and the extent of human influence on natural processes. Researchers emphasise the importance of studying historical climate patterns to assess future climate projections accurately. Michael Grimes expected to lead new U.S. sovereign wealth fund: Reuters Michael Grimes expected to lead new U.S. sovereign wealth fund: Reuters Michael Grimes, head of global technology investment banking at Morgan Stanley, smiles while speaking to freshman students enrolled in the Management, Entrepreneurship, and Technology (M.E.T.) program during an orientation at the University of California-Berkeley campus in Berkeley, California, U.S., on Friday, Aug. 17, 2018. David Paul Morris | Bloomberg | Getty Images Star technology investment banker Michael Grimes, who left Morgan Stanley to take up a senior role in the U.S. Commerce Department last month, is expected to lead the new U.S. sovereign wealth fund that was unveiled by President Donald Trump, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters. The discussions about Grimes potentially leading the efforts to create and spearhead the sovereign wealth fund are ongoing and no decision has been finalized, the sources said, requesting anonymity as the discussions are confidential. The fund, whose income sources have not been previously revealed, is designed to be backed by revenue from tariffs imposed on foreign countries, the sources said, cautioning that the deliberations are at an early stage and plans around how the fund will be financed could change. Trump has previously said the proposed new fund could be financed by “tariffs and other intelligent things.” Revenue from tariffs could be provided by the so-called External Revenue Service, an agency Trump wants to create to handle income generated from the levies, one of the sources said. The Commerce Department, Grimes and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Grimes made a name for himself at Morgan Stanley after leading several high-profile technology initial public offerings including those of Meta, Uber, and Airbnb. He famously moonlighted as an Uber driver to woo the company before its IPO in 2019 and advised Elon Musk on his $44 billion takeover of Twitter, which was rebranded X. Grimes took on a role as a senior adviser at the Commerce Department last month, but his remit has not been clear. He spent more than three decades at Morgan Stanley, serving as one of the heads of global technology investment banking before his departure from the bank. He has worked closely with Musk on deals involving his other companies, like Tesla. Morgan Stanley was the primary investment bank on the electric vehicle maker’s stock market launch. Funding sources The details, which have not been previously reported, highlight that plans for the sovereign wealth fund are beginning to take shape, amid questions about the feasibility of the creation of such an investment vehicle. In February, Trump signed an executive order ordering the creation of a sovereign wealth fund within the next year, saying it could potentially buy the short video app TikTok. If created, the sovereign wealth fund could place the U.S. alongside numerous other countries, particularly in the Middle East and Asia, that have launched similar funds as a way to make direct investments with government dollars. Typically, such funds rely on a country’s budget surplus to make investments, but the United States operates at a deficit. Its creation would also likely require approval from Congress. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency collects import duties, taxes and fees, with the money flowing daily into the U.S. Treasury’s operating cash balance. For the fiscal year ended September 30, the agency collected $88.07 billion of these revenues, compared with $92.3 billion a year earlier and $111.8 billion in 2022 – a year that was marked by high COVID-era purchases of imported goods. The Last Of Us Season 2 Is A “Different Version” Of The Game’s Story, Matrix Actor Joins Cast The Last Of Us Season 2 Is A “Different Version” Of The Game’s Story, Matrix Actor Joins Cast The Last of Us Season 2 premieres this April, and now we’ve learned a little more about it. In an interview, showrunner Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin discussed the show’s depature from the game’s story, revealed more actors who will appear in Season 2, and talked about how many more seasons there could be. Druckmann told Variety that Season 2 will contain a number of changes to the story as compared to The Last of Us: Part II, and while viewers are sure to voice their opinions, Druckmann said he feels confident in his creative choices. “I love the changes that we’ve made,” he said. “It’s a different version of that story, but its DNA is in there. Maybe more than excited, I’m really curious what their reaction will be.” Before this, Mazin alluded to The Last of Us Season 2 departing from the game’s story in a big way, saying he expects a level of “furor” over what’s changed. What those changes are, however, remains to be seen. Also in the interview, Mazin said it was always the plan to have Season 2 split the events of The Last of Us: Part II and tell the game’s story across two seasons. But how long could the show run in total? “It feels like we’ve got one or two more seasons,” Mazin said. “It’s getting harder to make, because every episode gets big. You don’t want to wait four years for a 17-episode finish, or whatever it is.” In February, a top HBO boss said The Last of Us could end after four seasons. The showrunners also previously discussed how The Last of Us TV series will not go beyond the events of the games, which some took to mean a potential future season of the show could dig into the story of a possible future The Last of Us: Part III game. But Druckmann said in the Variety interview, “Don’t bet on there being more of The Last of Us” after the TV show wraps up. Before this, Druckmann said he had ideas for a third game, but of course, plans can always change. Naughty Dog is producing a new single-player game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and at least one other single-player game. Whatever that second game is remains a mystery. A scene from The Last of Us Season 2 Gallery Finally, Variety reported that actor Joe Pantoliano (The Sopranos, The Matrix) plays the character Eugene in The last of Us Season 2. This character was only referenced in the game and never seen, but the TV show writers brought him to life for Season 2. “I get excited when I see these opportunities,” Druckmann said. “I’m like, ‘Oh, I don’t know Eugene that well!’ The story we told [in the game] was somewhat superficial. The way this character comes in really gets to the heart of Joel and Ellie and their relationship.” Others joining the cast for Season 2 include Alanna Ubach (Hanrahan; original character for the series), Ben Ahlers (Burton; original character for the series), Hettienne Park (Elise Park; original character for the series), Robert John Burke (Seth), and Noah Lamanna (Kat). The Last of Us Season 2 debuts April 13 and will have seven episodes in all. Assuming one episode releases each Sunday, Season 2 will wrap up on May 25. Season 2 picks up five years after the events of the first season, with Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) “drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.” In addition to Pascal and Ramsey–and Kaitlyn Dever as Abby–Season 2 features Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Rutina Wesley as Maria, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Own, and Jeffrey Wright reprising his role from the game as Isaac. Catherine O’Hara will appear as Joel’s therapist. As for the game series, The Last of Us Part II Remastered comes to PC on April 3, just before Season 2 of the show debuts. Physicists Achieve Record-Breaking Electron Beam Power and Current at SLAC Physicists Achieve Record-Breaking Electron Beam Power and Current at SLAC A major breakthrough in electron beam technology has been achieved by a team of physicists at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in Menlo Park, California. The highest-current and highest-peak-power electron beams ever generated have been reported, with a peak of 100 kiloamps sustained for just one quadrillionth of a second. This advancement, based on compressing electron bunches into extremely short bursts, could open new possibilities in chemical research, plasma studies, and fundamental physics by enhancing energy transfer processes. Breakthrough in Beam Compression According to the study published in Physical Review Letters, researchers used a particle accelerator to push high-energy electron beams to speeds approaching 99 percent of the speed of light. To maintain momentum while navigating curved paths within the accelerator, electrons were directed in a way that mimicked a straighter trajectory. This approach allowed energy variations within the electron bunch, known as chirping, which was later manipulated using magnetic fields. Precision Engineering in Beam Dynamics As per reports, to achieve extreme beam compression, a millimeter-long electron string was subjected to controlled deflections by magnets. This process caused lower-energy electrons to travel a slightly longer path, allowing higher-energy ones to catch up. The resulting beam was further refined by additional magnetic adjustments, producing an ultra-short pulse measuring just 0.3 micrometers in length. Implications for Future Research Scientists suggest that this technique could lead to advancements in high-energy density physics, ultrafast chemistry, and plasma generation. Vance, Hegseth and Gabbard visit southern border in Texas Vance, Hegseth and Gabbard visit southern border in Texas Trump touts sweeping immigration crackdown Trump touts sweeping immigration crackdown in address to Congress 04:27 Washington—Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard are at the southern border Wednesday to highlight the Trump administration’s efforts to combat ******** crossings and drug trafficking, the day following President Trump’s joint address to Congress in which immigration played a prominent role. The top administration officials are in the border town of Eagle Pass, Texas, roughly 100 miles west of San Antonio. Vance and Hegseth represent the highest-ranking administration officials to visit the southern border since Mr. Trump’s inauguration. They arrived one day after the Trump administration imposed 25% tariffs on nearly all imported goods from Mexico, citing Mexico’s handling of the situation at the border, a move that sent stocks tumbling. “We need Mexico and Canada to do much more than they’ve done, and they have to stop the fentanyl and drugs pouring into the USA,” the president said Tuesday night. “They’re going to stop it. I have sent Congress a detailed funding request laying out exactly how we will eliminate these threats to protect our homeland and complete the largest deportation operation in American history.” ******** border crossings at the U.S. southern border have plummeted since Mr. Trump took office. In February, his first full month in office, the White House says ******** border crossings reached the lowest level in at least 25 years. And the administration says more than 50,000 people in the country illegally have been removed from the U.S., a figure that includes migrants with violent criminal histories. The 28,000-person town of Eagle Pass, where Vance and top officials are heading, is in Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales’ district. His district spans the majority of the length of Texas’ portion of the border with Mexico. Vance has visited the southern border before. He made a trip to the border wall in San Diego, California, in September. Kathryn Watson Kathryn Watson is a politics reporter for CBS News Digital, based in Washington, D.C. SpaceX Delays Starship Flight 8 Launch After Technical Glitches SpaceX Delays Starship Flight 8 Launch After Technical Glitches The scheduled test flight of SpaceX’s Starship Flight 8, which was expected to take off from the company’s Starbase facility in Texas on March 3, has been postponed due to last-minute technical issues. The launch was planned within a window starting at 6:30 p.m. ET with a mission to test various aspects of the rocket’s performance, including booster recovery and satellite deployment. SpaceX has not yet announced a new launch date, but updates are expected soon. The flight was set to be the eighth major test for Starship, which is designed to be the most powerful rocket ever built. Starship’s Mission and Test Objectives As per reports, the flight plan, Starship was expected to launch atop its Super Heavy booster, which was intended to return to the launch pad and be caught by the “chopstick” arms of the tower. The upper stage of the rocket was set to release four mock versions of SpaceX’s Starlink satellites on a suborbital trajectory before splashing down in the Indian Ocean approximately 66 minutes after liftoff. A similar test conducted on January 16 with Flight 7 saw the successful recovery of the booster, but the upper stage failed due to a propellant leak, leading to an explosion before it could complete its mission. NASA’s Interest and Future Developments NASA has selected Starship as the lunar lander for the Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the Moon in the coming years. The vehicle is also being developed for deep-space missions, including potential crewed journeys to Mars. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has indicated that future iterations of Starship may be even larger than the current model, which stands at 123 metres. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is expected to grant approval for up to 25 Starship launches in 2025, marking a significant step toward the rocket’s operational use. Did video steal the radio sign?: Community radio station left scratching head after new sign vanishes Did video steal the radio sign?: Community radio station left scratching head after new sign vanishes Did video steal the radio sign? Harvey Community Radio presenters have been been left scratching their heads after their new sign was pinched off South Western Highway, only a month after going on display. Radio presenter Duncan Booth said he became aware of the theft at the end of February and initially thinking the easterly wind was the culprit. “I re-drilled all the holes, and I had nine of the biggest rivets I could find holding it up — and I put it up perfectly,” he said. “When I learned it was gone I initially thought ‘oh, classic the easterly has got it’, but it’s surrounded by trees and there’s no broken sign. Camera IconThe new Harvey Community Radio sign was put up on January 25. Credit: Supplied “Then I saw the drill holes.” Mr Booth believes the sign was intentionally removed by someone and is now likely on display in a shed somewhere. “You know, it’s not the Mona Lisa, where you’d hide it away in a small back room for only you to enjoy,” he said. “It would be on display in somebody’s shed, no doubt.” Mr Booth said while it was not a work of priceless art, the sign had been a fairly substantial investment for the community radio station and replacing it would now prove a challenge. “We run on a bit of a shoestring and while this is good for publicity, every dollar counts,” he said. Mr Booth said he was hoping to have the sign returned and if anyone had any information about its whereabouts, there would be “no questions asked”. “Just hand it back, we’ll be happy and move on,” he said. Primordial Helium-3 May Be Locked in Earth’s Core, Study Finds Primordial Helium-3 May Be Locked in Earth’s Core, Study Finds Helium-3, a rare isotope formed during the early solar system, may be locked within Earth’s solid core, as indicated by recent research. This discovery could provide insights into how quickly the planet was formed. Unlike helium-4, which is commonly produced through radioactive decay, helium-3 originates from the primordial gas cloud that shaped the solar system. While traces of this isotope have been detected in volcanic hotspots and mid-ocean ridges, the mechanism behind its retention for billions of years remains uncertain. Given helium’s volatile nature, most of it was expected to escape Earth’s mantle due to tectonic activity or the giant impact that led to the formation of the Moon. Helium and Iron Interaction at Core Conditions According to the study published in Physical Review Letters, researchers at the University of Tokyo led by Kei Hirose examined whether helium could mix with iron under conditions mimicking Earth’s core. Using a diamond-tipped anvil, the team subjected iron and helium to extreme pressures ranging from 50,000 to 550,000 times the atmospheric pressure at Earth’s surface. As per reports, the samples were heated to temperatures between 727 and 2,727 degrees Celsius before being depressurised and analysed at cryogenic temperatures to prevent helium escape. Findings indicated that solid iron could incorporate up to 3.3 percent helium, suggesting the isotope may remain trapped in the core over long periods. Potential Impact on Earth’s Formation Timeline Peter Olson, a geophysicist at the University of New Mexico, told that these results confirm helium’s compatibility with Earth’s solid core. However, he noted that only 4 percent of the core is solid, with the majority existing in a liquid state. Further research is needed to determine whether helium-3 could be similarly retained in the liquid portion. Olson also highlighted the significance of this discovery in dating Earth’s formation. If helium-3 was incorporated into the core, it suggests the planet formed rapidly within a few million years. A slower formation process spanning 100 million years would likely have resulted in minimal helium retention. US congressional committee on China urges Americans to ditch TP-Link routers US congressional committee on China urges Americans to ditch TP-Link routers By Michael Martina WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A U.S. congressional committee on Wednesday urged Americans to remove ********-made wireless routers from their homes, including those made by TP-Link, calling them a security threat that opened the door for China to hack U.S. critical infrastructure. The House of Representatives’ select committee on China has pushed the Commerce Department to investigate China’s TP-Link Technology Co, which according to research firm IDC, is the top seller of WiFi routers internationally by unit volume. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. U.S. authorities are considering a ban on the U.S. ***** of the company’s routers, according to media reports. Rob Joyce, former director of cybersecurity at the National Security Agency, told a committee hearing that TP-Link devices, exposed individuals to cyber intrusion through which hackers could gain leverage to attack critical infrastructure. The company appeared to be dominating U.S. retail market share by selling devices at low prices to drive out competition, Joyce said. “We need to all take action and replace those devices so they don’t become the tools that are used in the attacks on the U.S.,” Joyce said, adding that he understood the Commerce Department was considering a ban. TP-Link did not respond immediately to a request for comment. The committee’s Democratic ranking member ***** Krishnamoorthi, holding up a consumer-grade TP-Link router, said: “Don’t use this.” “I don’t have one at home either. It’s not a good idea,” Krishnamoorthi said. Joyce said ******** government-linked hackers were “approaching a peer status” with U.S. cyber capabilities, and that he had grave concerns that the Trump administration’s efforts to cut the federal workforce could undermine U.S. cyber defenses. “Eliminating probationary employees will destroy a pipeline of top talent essential for hunting and eradicating PRC threats,” Joyce said, referring to the People’s Republic of China. Democratic Representative Shontel Brown said the Trump administration had laid off more than 130 officials from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). In 2023, CISA said TP-Link routers had a vulnerability that could be exploited to execute remote code. Krishnamoorthi said the U.S. must deter ******** hackers by going on offense. “I think that we should also consider potentially enlisting private sector actors to hack back at the hackers. I’m going to get in a lot of trouble for saying that, but I think you have to sometimes use fire against fire,” Krishnamoorthi said. Maker builds Raspberry Pi-powered temperature gun using a Pico 2 Maker builds Raspberry Pi-powered temperature gun using a Pico 2 There are all sorts of handy tools out there, and a handful of them can be made from scratch with a Raspberry Pi. No one knows this better than maker and developer Arnov Sharma who’s using our favorite SBC to power this custom-built temperature gun. To save on power, he’s opted to use the latest Raspberry Pi Pico 2 microcontroller. GY-906 Temperature GUN with Raspberry Pi PICO 2 – YouTube Watch On According to Sharma, he wanted to create an open source temperature gun that anyone could recreate on their own. This device lets you monitor temperature without making contact with the help of an infrared temperature sensor. The module used to pull this off is known as a G7-906 which can interface easily with the Pico 2. Sharma explained that this is the first version of the project and is more of a prototype that proves its function. As such, it’s built around a breadboard — but another version is planned that will include a custom PCB and completely soldered connections. That said, this prototype proves that you don’t need the custom PCB to make the project work. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Arnov Sharma) (Image credit: Arnov Sharma) As we’ve already mentioned, the Pico 2 is the main board powering this thermal gun but you could get away with using the original Pico if that’s all you have on hand. It’s connected to the GY-906 infrared temperature sensor as well as an OLED Display that has a resolution of 124 x 32px. Temperature data is output in real time using this display, along with a button to trigger the reading. The code for the project has been made completely open source and is available over at Hackster for anyone to download (or just explore). It works by interpreting data from the GY-906 sensor and converting it into Celsius for the OLED display. A detailed explanation of how this is accomplished is available on the project page, including the equation used to calculate the data. If you want to see this Raspberry Pi project in action, you can check out a demo video of it over at YouTube and read more about the construction process at Hackster. New Jersey Betting Bill Could Permit Esports Players to Wager on Themselves New Jersey Betting Bill Could Permit Esports Players to Wager on Themselves It has been discovered that a newly proposed bill in the state of New Jersey could allow esports competitors to wager on themselves and their teams if successfully implemented. This bill would be integrated alongside new ‘esports-specific skins’ that would permit licensees to offer odds on esports betting markets in the state. This news comes almost six years after the state’s first legal esports wager was placed at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City. In 2021, the state opened its doors to esports betting as part of the legal sports betting portfolio in the region, but things are still developing. Half the Industry In the most recent edition of the Sharpr newsletter, it was revealed that New Jersey lawmakers are working on a unique bill that would introduce something quite bizarre. If successfully passed, esports competitors (of legal betting age) could bet on (or against…) themselves or their teams. It’s hard to see how that couldn’t go wrong – it’s a recipe for disaster, surely. In the report from Sharpr, it was claimed that the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement will have the power to authorise venues holding esports events to accept exclusive wagers on the outcome of said events. The primary sponsor of the bill, William Moen, explained that this is a step to ‘capitalise on an emerging industry.’ It’s a relatively well-known fact that esports betting makes up around 50% of the industry’s overall revenue – a substantial sum. Behind esports betting sits merchandising, ticket sales, sponsorships, and broadcast rights, but the esports industry is still not entirely profitable. Last September, at ESI Lisbon, an expert panel featuring representatives from GRID, Kambi Abios, and BETER expressed that billions are being made in wagers and that the esports betting market is no longer ’emerging’, as Moen puts it. This latest bill proposed in New Jersey seems like a wrong turn, but the state has been at the forefront of esports betting for a while, so there must be some method to the madness. Admittedly, it’s not the first time something like this has existed. In the past, some sites have offered players the ability to place wagers on themselves in certain games, charging them with completing challenges to receive a payout. That’s entirely different to betting on yourself as a pro esports player in a competitive environment, though. Have you ever placed a bet on an esports match? Starmer’s strategy for dealing with Team Trump outbursts Starmer’s strategy for dealing with Team Trump outbursts Week after week, there was a grim but poignant ritual at the start of Prime Minister’s Question Time. The prime minister would begin by acknowledging by name and by rank the British servicemen and women killed serving their country. But what happened this week was different. Not different in how it was done or the solemnity of the moment as MPs fell quiet and listened respectfully. But different because this time Sir Keir Starmer was marking the anniversaries of deaths rather than recent ones, which does not happen normally. And he was doing so intentionally to mark in actions, not commentary, what the government thought of the US Vice President JD Vance’s remarks about the military sacrifices of America’s allies. It is a case study in the dilemma *** ministers face: they are striving to have a close and productive relationship with a White House known for shooting its mouth off. No10’s approach is one of discretion and avoiding the temptation to commentate. Or to put it more crudely, don’t get into a slanging match with Team Trump because you are certain to lose. So when European leaders were tapping out various levels of social media opprobrium on Friday evening after President Zelensky’s bumpy meeting in Washington, Downing Street were not. The prime minister, we were later told, was on the phone to both President Trump and President Zelensky to try to patch things up. In other words, leveraging the relationship he has with both to try to move things forward: governing, not commentating. Now put yourself in the prime minister’s shoes. You are determined to maintain this discipline because you believe it to be sensible, pragmatic and in the ***’s national interest. But it is also true, according to opinion polls, that considerably more people in the *** are inclined to be critical of Donald Trump than supportive of him, particularly on his handling of Ukraine. In comparison, Sir Keir’s approach is welcomed by many. But what do you do to deal with those who might think Sir Keir is being far too cosy with President Trump, and, crucially, what do you do when his team do something you might regard as egregiously indefensible? The other night JD Vance went on Fox News and claimed that the American plan for Ukraine offered a “better security guarantee that 20,000 troops from some random country that hasn’t fought a war in 30 or 40 years”. There are only two countries that have publicly said that they would provide troops, the *** and France, neither of which the vice president mentioned. But plenty in the *** were outraged by the remarks, whether they were a reference to Britain or not. And the government found a mechanism, in co-opting and reviving a recent ritual, but this time to mark anniversaries, to make its view clear too. When us reporters asked the prime minister’s team afterwards why they had done it, they stuck rigidly to their strategy: don’t commentate. They didn’t, and they didn’t need to. Sony opens an official PS5 rental service in the *** Sony opens an official PS5 rental service in the *** We’re over four years into the current generation of consoles (which is probably past the halfway point) and while Sony is still , the price of the system means it remains out of reach for many. To help address that, Sony has teamed up with a leasing company called Raylo to offer a PS5 rental service in the *** via the country’s . Leases for the PS5 Digital Edition, the version with a disc drive and the PS5 Pro are available on 12-, 24- or 36-month agreements or a rolling monthly contract. The longer a term you lock in, the lower the monthly price will be. For instance, a 36-month agreement for a PS5 Digital Edition costs £11 (around $14) per month. A rolling contract for the PS5 Pro, however, will run you a whopping £35.59 (nearly $46) per month. There are also leasing options available for the PlayStation Portal and the PS VR2 headset, which . As points out, there’s a lifetime warranty on each device. Raylo won’t force customers to pay extra if they return one at the end of a lease with minor dents, scratches or discoloration (though there will be penalties for “significant damage”). You can cancel at any point, but you’ll need to pay a fee if you change your mind before 18 months have passed, though there is a 14-day grace *******. While there are some benefits to leasing, particularly for those who want to play a PS5 but can’t afford the initial cost of buying one upfront, there are drawbacks. Depending on the lease term and length of the plan, renting a PS5 can cost more than buying one. There are options to buy a device at the end of a lease, or to continue renting or upgrade (a three-year contract would take you up around the time the PS6 is ). Otherwise, you won’t own the thing you’ve been paying for over the last several months. On the other hand, Xbox has offered for the Xbox Series X/S from the outset with Game Pass Ultimate included. And yes, you do get to keep that console at the end of the financing *******. If you buy something through a link in this article, we may earn commission. Hawks ‘unstoppable’ if Kell fires in NBL title series Hawks ‘unstoppable’ if Kell fires in NBL title series Justin Tatum has warned the Illawarra Hawks will be “unstoppable” in the NBL championship series if Melbourne United allow Trey Kell to get off the leash. Tatum is in a confident mood heading into the best-of-five title series opener on Saturday night after witnessing his free-scoring team smash records to get there. The Hawks qualified with a 126-96 demolition of South East Melbourne in their playoff decider, posting the highest-scoring first half (70 points) by any team this season. Import Kell (30 points) and veteran Todd Blanchfield (28) put on a clinic as Illawarra – an NBL foundation club in 1979 – also recorded the biggest score and winning margin in their finals history. Now only Melbourne stand between Tatum’s Hawks and the club’s second championship, following their only title success so far back in 2001. “I feel confident, especially after the display of my guys playing today,” Tatum told reporters after Illawarra’s thrashing of the Phoenix. “We know that we’ve got three more games to finish the job that we’ve had in mind for the whole season – winning the whole thing. “Melbourne’s a professional, really good, great team and they have the same aspirations that we do to win the whole thing. “But they’ve got to come here first, so hopefully we can build off this jgame and find a way to pull the win out on Saturday.” All-NBL First Team member Kell will be key to his team’s fortunes, after torching the Phoenix with 26 first-half points in the playoff decider. The American guard had 16 points on perfect five-of-five shooting from the field and four-of-four at the foul line in an explosive first *******. It was an outstanding response to his self-confessed “terrible” game-two performance, when he managed just six points on one-of-ten shooting. “Seeing him with that energy, getting the crowd going, finding his spots and getting shots going early does nothing but ignite us,” Tatum said. “It gets everybody else going because he draws a lot of attention and then he sees other guys open. “We want to make sure that our starters set the tone and our bench guys come up and finish off whatever’s left on the plate. “When he gets going like that, man, we’re unstoppable.” Illawarra have won the last two of three clashes with Melbourne this season as they prepare for their first championship series in eight years.
