Diablo 4 is ‘Too Easy’ and Blizzard is Preparing to Make it Tougher
Diablo 4 is ‘Too Easy’ and Blizzard is Preparing to Make it Tougher
During a recent campfire stream, Blizzard’s developers working on Diablo 4 reflected on the most recent season, suggesting that things didn’t pan out as expected. They confirmed that the game has become far too easy and revealed that players are levelling up in ‘half the time’ compared to previous seasons, even on harder difficulty levels.
As someone new to Diablo, I can attest to that. I’m usually awful at challenging games, but even after cranking it up a few levels, I’m having no issues whatsoever with Diablo 4.
That’s set to change, though.
Prepare for Hell
When the next season rolls around in Diablo 4, players will find themselves levelling up slower and facing a tougher grind compared to the current season, which is focused on the Vessel of Hatred expansion.
In the recent campfire stream, Blizzard’s Colin Finer revealed that players are ‘chewing through some of the content’ much too quickly, hitting level 60 and securing their Paragon classification far too rapidly and with too few struggles.
In season 8, players will find that they’re levelling slower through the first 25 levels of a new character and that rarer loot – such as Legendary items – will be much harder to find.
Here’s the full campfire chat with Blizzard:
(Thanks to Polygon for the spot)
The team revealed that ‘too many’ players have found their way into the highest difficulty level of the game in record time, which represents a kind of imbalance in the player base.
Just from a philosophy standpoint, we really want whatever the hardest Torment tier is — in this case Torment 4 — to be aspirational, and to us that means around 10% (of players).
Presently, around 50% of the players in the Vessel of Hatred season have made it to the highest difficulty level. To battle back against that issue, Blizzard will be adding new, more challenging boss characters in the new season, and existing bosses will have their abilities cranked to the max.
It’ll be a while before all that arrives, though. The next season of Diablo 4 isn’t expected to drop until April 29.

Andrew Tate, social media influencer who faces trafficking charges, sits cageside for UFC 313
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Former kickboxer and controversial internet personality Andrew Tate was cageside for UFC 313 inside T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night, one night after attending Dana White’s Power Slap 12 at Fontainebleau Las Vegas.
Tate and his brother, Tristan, left Romania late last month after a travel ban on them was lifted while they face charges including human trafficking, all part of an alleged organized crime ring. Andrew Tate was also charged with *****.
The Tates, who are dual U.S.-British citizens, were arrested in late 2022 and formally indicted last year.

The Tate brothers, who have denied all wrongdoing in the case, arrived in Florida on Feb. 27. Florida’s attorney general announced Tuesday that his office has opened a criminal investigation into the brothers.
“We live in a democratic society where it’s innocent until proven guilty. And I think my brother and I are largely misunderstood,” Andrew Tate said Thursday in Florida.
White was seen shaking hands and hugging Tate and his brother, Tristan, on Friday, when the UFC president and CEO could be heard on a viral video saying: “Welcome to the States, boys.”

Kieren Briggs: GWS ruckman taken to hospital after head hit in opening clash against Collingwood
Kieren Briggs has endured a nightmare start to the young AFL season, with the GWS ruck star taken to hospital after an ugly clash in the opening term against Collingwood.

Taylor’s hip made contact with the ruckman’s head, leaving Briggs laid out on the turf for several minutes before the stretcher was called for.
After being assessed in the rooms, Briggs was taken to hospital for scans on his neck and took no further part in the contest.

It’s a blow for the Giants, who relied on part-timer Lachie Keeffe in the ruck for the remainder of the clash against the Magpies.
The 25-year-old may well be forced to miss next weekend’s match-up against Melbourne, depending on whether concussion symptoms are determined.
Briggs has featured in all bar one of GWS’ past 42 games since becoming the side’s first-choice ruckman midway through the 2023 campaign.

How Trump’s threats have revived the Liberal Party in Canada
How Trump’s threats have revived the Liberal Party in Canada
Nadine Yousif
BBC News, Toronto
Watch: ‘It’s frustrating’ – How Trump’s tariffs are being received in Canada
If you had asked Canadians a few months ago who would win the country’s next general election, most would have predicted a decisive victory for the Conservative Party.
That outcome does not look so certain now.
In the wake of US President Donald Trump’s threats against Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party has surged in the polls, shrinking the double-digit lead their Conservative rivals had held steadily since mid-2023.
The dramatic change in the country’s political landscape reflects how Trump’s tariffs and his repeated calls to make Canada “the 51st state” have fundamentally altered ********* voters’ priorities.
Trump’s rhetoric has “pushed away all of the other issues” that were top of mind for Canadians before his inauguration on 20 January, notes Luc Turgeon, a political science professor at the University of Ottawa.
It has even managed to revive the once deeply unpopular Trudeau, whose approval rate has climbed by 12 points since December. The prime minister, of course, will not be in power for much longer, having announced his resignation at the start of the year.
On Sunday, his Liberals will declare the results of the leadership contest to determine who takes over a party running a precarious ********* government. The new leader will have two immediate decisions to make: how to respond to Trump’s threats, and when to call a general election. The answer to the first dilemma will surely influence the second.
A federal election must be held on or before 20 October, but could be called as early as this week.
Polls indicate that many Canadians still want a change at the top. But what that change would look like – a Liberal government under new leadership, or a complete shift to the Conservatives – is now anyone’s guess, says Greg Lyle, president of the Toronto-based Innovative Research Group, which has been polling Canadians on their shifting attitudes.
“Up until now, it was a blowout for the Conservatives,” he tells the BBC.
Getty Images
Justin Trudeau’s resignation and the emergence of Mark Carney as the front-runner to replace him amid Donald Trump’s tariffs has reversed the Liberals’ fortunes.
That is because the centre-right party led by Pierre Poilievre, has been effective in its messaging on issues that have occupied the ********* psyche for the last few years: the rising cost of living, housing unaffordability, crime and a strained healthcare system.
Poilievre successfully tied these societal problems to what he labelled Trudeau’s “disastrous” policies, and promised a return to “common sense politics”.
But with Trudeau’s resignation, and Trump’s threats to Canada’s economic security and even its sovereignty, that messaging has become stale, Mr Lyle says. His polling suggests the majority of the country is now most afraid of Trump’s presidency and the impact it will have on Canada.
Trump’s 25% tariffs on all ********* imports to the US, some of which have been paused until 2 April, could be devastating for Canada’s economy, which sends three-quarters of all its products to the US. Officials have predicted up to a million job losses as a result, and Canada could head into a recession if the tax on goods persists.
Trudeau left no doubt how seriously he is taking the threat, when he told reporters this week that Trump’s stated reason for the US tariffs – the flow of fentanyl across the border – was bogus and unjustified.
“What he wants is to see a total collapse of the ********* economy, because that’ll make it easier to annex us,” the prime minister warned.
“In many ways, it’s an all encompassing, fundamental issue about the survival of the country,” Prof Turgeon tells the BBC. Who is best placed to stand up for Canada against Trump has therefore become the key question in the forthcoming election.
The Conservatives are still ahead in the polls, with the latest averages suggesting 40% of voters back them. The Liberals’ fortunes, meanwhile, have been revived, with their support climbing to slightly over 30% – up 10 points from January.
Getty Images
In response to Trump’s threats, the Conservative Party has shifted its slogan to “Canada First”
Liberals have attempted to highlight similarities between the Conservative leader and Republican president. At last week’s leadership debate, candidates referred to Poilievre as “our little version of Trump here at home” and said he was looking to “imitate” the US president. A Liberal Party attack ad juxtaposed clips of the two using similar phrases such as “fake news” and “radical left”.
There are clear differences, however, between the two politicians, in terms of style and substance. And Trump himself has downplayed any parallels, telling British magazine The Spectator in a recent interview that Poilievre is “not Maga enough”.
Still, polls suggest a slipping of Conservative support. A recent poll by national pollster Angus Reid indicates Canadians believe Liberal leadership front-runner Mark Carney is better equipped to deal with Trump on issues of tariffs and trade than Poilievre.
The former central banker for both Canada and England is touting his experience dealing with economic crises, including the 2008 financial ****** and Brexit.
And the shift in the political mood has forced Conservatives to recalculate their messaging.
If the election is called soon, the campaign will take place at a moment when Trump’s threats have inspired a fierce patriotism among Canadians. Many are boycotting American goods at their local grocery stores or even cancelling trips to the US.
Prof Turgeon says this “rallying around the flag” has become a key theme of ********* politics.
The Conservatives have shifted away from their “Canada is Broken” slogan, which Mr Lyle says risked coming across as “anti-patriotic”, to “Canada First”.
Conservatives have also redirected their attacks towards Carney. Before Trump’s tariffs, they ran ads saying he is “just like Justin” in an attempt to tie him to Trudeau. But in recent weeks, the Conservatives have started digging into Carney’s loyalty to Canada.
Specifically, they have questioned whether he had a role in moving the headquarters of Brookfield Asset Management – a ********* investment company – from Toronto to New York when he served as its chair.
Carney has responded that he had left the firm by the time that decision was made, but company documents reported on by public broadcaster CBC show the board approved the move in October 2024, when Carney was still at Brookfield.
The move, and Carney’s equivocation of his involvement with it, was criticised by the editorial board of Canada’s national newspaper the Globe and Mail, which wrote on Thursday that Carney must be transparent with Canadians.
More broadly, the paper wrote: “Every party leader must understand that Canada is entering a years-long ******* of uncertainty. The next prime minister will have to call on the trust of Canadians to lead the country where it needs to head but may not want to go.”
Given the anxiety reverberating among Canadians, Mr Lyle says that any ambiguity about Carney’s loyalty to the country could yet be damaging for him and the Liberals.
Whenever the election comes, and whoever wins, one thing is certain: Trump will continue to influence and reshape ********* politics just as he has in the United States.

Raquel Welch told to hide Bolivian roots: documentary
Raquel Welch told to hide Bolivian roots: documentary
Raquel Welch was encouraged by people in Hollywood to downplay her Hispanic roots, according to a new documentary.
The Hollywood actress – who died in 2023 aged 82 – is the focus of a documentary, I am Raquel Welch, which reveals how she was urged to hide her Bolivian ancestry.
Gregory Nava, a director who worked with the actress on American Family: Journey of Dreams, the TV drama series, said: “She was saying they wanted to change her hair, her look, her name.
“Her manager at the time was saying, ‘No, you don’t want to come off as being Hispanic.’ They wanted to change her first name from Raquel to, I think, Debbie Welch. Very much in the Sandra Dee, Doris Day tradition, you know. But she refused.”
The movie star’s birth name was Jo Raquel Welch Tejada, but she ultimately adopted the surname of her first husband, James Welch.
Brian Eugenio, a cultural historian at Princeton University, says in the documentary: “Her father was a structural engineer who was a Bolivian immigrant to the United States who married an Anglo woman (Josephine Sarah Hall), and so, she was raised as fully aware that she was Bolivian.
“As she tells the story, her father refused to speak Spanish in the house ’cause he didn’t want his kids to have an accent.”
In a clip in the documentary, Welch admitted to feeling that part of her was “missing”.
The One Million Years B.C actress – who became a star in the 1960s – explained: “The part of me that was missing was the part of me that my father chose to just amputate out of our lives.”

Phoenix fight past Wanderers to keep finals hopes alive
Phoenix fight past Wanderers to keep finals hopes alive
A stunning goal from recruit Mebae Tanaka has helped Wellington clinch a comeback 2-1 win over Western Sydney and kept the Phoenix firmly in the A-League Women finals race.
Western Sydney appeared set to extend their winning streak to four when Bronte Trew opened the scoring in the 22nd minute at Porirua Park on Sunday.
But Japanese attacker Tanaka, recruited after impressing in Victoria’s NPLW with Preston, let rip with a wonderful strike in the 75th minute, before Olivia Fergusson scored the winner 11 minutes later.
Eighth-placed Wellington (23 points) are just a point outside the top six with five games to go.
“I’m ecstatic,” Wellington skipper Annalie Longo told Paramount Plus.
“Bit of a roller-coaster game, but I guess to go out there and get the three points … very, very proud of the girls.
“It’s keeping that momentum going.
“We know we want to make finals and we know that every game counts.”
The Wanderers (15 points) are nine points outside the top six.
Western Sydney took the lead when Alivia Kelly didn’t properly judge a back-pass, with her poor touch opening the door for Trew to **** in, pinch the ball and burst forward to score.
Wellington should have equalised on multiple occasions, with Fergusson missing two close-range chances late in the half.
In the 58th minute, Sham Khamis made a superb double save to deny Alyssa Whinham, then Manaia Elliott in quick succession.
Elliott was forced off on the hour mark after copping a ball to the face and Tanaka replaced her.
Fifteen minutes later, a shallow clearance from a corner bobbled out to Tanaka, who turned on to her right and let rip with a wonderful strike into the roof of the net.
In the 86th minute, Talia Younis lost the ball and Zoe McMeeken whipped a cross in to the near post, where Fergusson athletically volleyed home the winner.
“It definitely feels like one that got away from us,” Wanderers skipper Amy Harrison said.
“We dominated most parts of the game and I feel really hard done by to not come away with something.”
Melbourne Victory and Canberra United will face off later on Sunday.

See the full list of ‘first wave’ locations being remodeled now
See the full list of ‘first wave’ locations being remodeled now
Fans of the beleaguered retail chain Big Lots will be happy to learn that the first locations to reopen after its bankruptcy last year are currently undergoing a cleaning, remodeling, and re-merchandising process. Their reopening, the first in a series of four waves of “soft openings,” is scheduled for next month. Here’s what you need to know about when and where Big Lots stores will reopen.
Most Read from Fast Company
Variety Wholesalers, the North Carolina-based retail company that has taken control of hundreds of the ailing retailer’s stores, has confirmed with Fast Company that it is gearing up to reopen some of the locations that it has acquired.
As Fast Company previously reported, as many as 200 Big Lots stores were assigned to Variety Wholesalers as part of a deal with Gordon Brothers, the liquidation firm that took control of the retailer. The locations will reopen in four waves from April through early June. Fast Company has now learned that the first of those waves is underway.
The first wave of Big Lots store reopenings will encompass nine stores in six states across the South. Those locations are:
1041 S Riverside Dr, Clarksville, TN
744 Nashville Pike, Gallatin, TN
220 Dickson Plaza Dr, Dickson, TN
Jeff King, Variety Wholesalers vice president of sales and marketing, told Fast Company that the company began the necessary work on March 3 to reopen the locations. He confirmed that the nine locations listed above will have their soft openings on Thursday, April 10.
The stores will remain closed for a ******* of time before then so Variety Wholesalers can perform necessary work, which includes cleaning the locations, as well as remodeling the stores and bringing in new categories of merchandise.
King also confirmed plans for the second wave of Big Lots opening. He said that wave would include considerably more locations—another 70 stores—and that those stores would reopen on Thursday, May 1.
It’s fair to say that 2024 was the worst year in Big Lots’s 57-year history. After suffering financial difficulties for years, Big Lots announced in December that it would be going out of business and closing all remaining 870 locations, and thus seeing the elimination of 27,000 jobs.
Story Continues
Gordon Brothers purchased Big Lots and had been managing the stores’ closures when, in the final days of 2024, Variety Wholesalers swooped in, agreeing to buy at least 200 locations from the liquidator to keep the chain going under the Big Lots brand. Variety is the owner of several other discount chain stores, including Roses, Bill’s Dollar Stores, Super Dollar, and Bargain Town.
Other states besides the ones listed above that are expected to see Big Lots stores reopen include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and West Virginia.

‘SNL’ Cold Open: Mike Myers’ Elon Musk Returns for Heated Oval Office Meeting With Trump and Marco Rubio
‘SNL’ Cold Open: Mike Myers’ Elon Musk Returns for Heated Oval Office Meeting With Trump and Marco Rubio
“Saturday Night Live” promised a night full of Lady Gaga in this week’s episode, but President Donald Trump’s antics and the return of Mike Myers as Elon Musk dominated the hilarious “SNL” cold open once again.
After re-enacting the chaotic meeting between Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy last week, the March 8 episode followed as James Austin Johnson’s Trump tried to bring a truce between Marco Rubio (Marcello Hernandez) and Elon Musk (Mike Myers) during a meeting in the oval office. The “SNL” meeting followed a New York Times report about a heated cabinet meeting that ended in a screaming match between Trump’s Secretary of State and the X CEO and head of DOGE.
“I know you’re under a lot of stress, but I can’t have you fighting with Elon,” Trump said to Rubio while prepping him to welcome Musk into the meeting. “I need you to be my good litte Marco.” Rubio appears ready to tell off his boss but says, “If you think I’m going to stand here and let you call me that… You’re right!”
Rubio proceeds to give Trump an update on his efforts to retake the Panama Canal — one of the president’s early whims since taking office. But Trump tells him he is no longer interested in that because “it sounds like a hassle.” The interaction contains a few hilarious asides going on in each politicians’ head, including this one from Trump: “Wait a minute, what is this? I’m thinking something and not saying it out loud. Whoa. This is a whole new thing. This is crazy. This can save me a lot of trouble. I should do this more often. I won’t, but I should.”
When Musk appears, the power dynamic shifts as Trump attempts to ease the tension between his colleagues. Rubio calls out his boss for giving so much government power and access to Musk. After exchanging some barbs, Trump reminds Musk that Rubio is an important part of the team.
The CEO then has his own aside inside his mind, saying: “Phase one of my plan is complete: Ingratiate yourself to the president and take over the media. But was taking this job a bad idea? A lot of people seem to really hate me, like Tesla’s stock is crashing and my personal net worth just dropped by $100 billion.”
Trump proceeds to establish some rules between Rubio and Musk to minimize any more bad headlines. He tells Rubio to get his budget under control, while telling the DOGE head to stay in his lane.
Then Musk reminds Trump of the $300 million he paid Trump to take over control of his government, so the president tells him he’ll get out of “your office.”

Journeyman golfer Hodge wins NZ PGA championship
Journeyman golfer Hodge wins NZ PGA championship
Self-described journeyman Tyler Hodge has won the New Zealand PGA championship for the biggest victory of his professional golf career.
Hodge prevailed by one shot from fellow New Zealander Kerry Mountcastle and *********** Tim Hart in a tense triumph on Sunday at the Hastings Golf Club.
Hodge carded 69 in the final round to finish at 16 under for the tournament.
The lefthander weathered some wobbles – he carded three bogeys in an eight-hole span to the 16th – but steadied with pars on the last two holes.
Hodge turned pro in 2015 but quit four years later.
After a year away from the game, he returned to amateur golf and caddying before, in 2023, deciding to return to the pro circuit.
“I had a couple of years off a few years ago and then kind of came back to the game and have been enjoying it,” the 30-year-old said.”But she’s a tough old slog, pro golf. My fiancee and I have been having some chats about possibly giving the pro playing stuff away.”We’ll have to have a bit more of a chat over the winter about that.
“I’m almost a journeyman now. Golf is different, there’s a lot of learnings that you have to go through yourself.”People can tell you about it and stuff like that but you have to experience a few of those things and get through a lot of adversity.”Slowly but surely I’ve got back into it and then obviously enjoyed it enough to have another crack at the pro stuff.”
Mountcastle and Hart tied for second at 15 under, with Queensland duo Anthony Quayle and Shae Wools-Cobb sharing third with New Zealander Tim Wilkinson at 14 under.

New Last of Us Season 2 Trailer Showcases Expansion of Story
New Last of Us Season 2 Trailer Showcases Expansion of Story
In the latest trailer for the second season of The Last of Us, we’re given a brief glimpse at the expansion of the story established in the 2020 game. It has been known for a while that the sheer amount of meat on the bones has given way to the second game having a two-series split in terms of the live-action adaptation, but that hasn’t stopped the showrunners from creating fresh storylines.
In particular, we’re given an extended look at the attack on Jackson—Ellie and Joel’s home haven in the game—by vast swathes of infected. This sequence isn’t replicated in the game, but some of the perspectives are reminiscent of No Return, the additional mode added with the release of The Last of Us Part II Remastered.
Content Galore
The Last of Us Part II has plenty of inspiration to draw from when it comes to creating extra content for the live-action adaptation. In 2023, with the launch of the first season, viewers were treated to an entire episode that explored the backstory of Bill and Frank – and that sequence alone won the show an Emmy Award.
In the latest trailer, we get the idea that Craig Mazin, Neil Druckmann, and everyone else involved is following a similar pattern in the second (and assumedly the third) season of the HBO show.
Here’s the clip:
Once again, the cinematics smack of the most faithful recreation possible, and we can now see that a fair amount of flashback content will be included in season two. For instance, we’ll be heading back to the prequel scenes that see Ellie and Joel explore a museum on Ellie’s birthday, ultimately discovering a building packed with dinosaurs, spacecraft, and danger.
We also get an extended look at the Seraphites, but it doesn’t look like Lev and Yara are being revealed just yet. We do see some other sequences that suggest the Seraphites and their background will be explored further in the show, which would help to set up a little more lore for those uninitiated in the story thus far.
The WLF is front and centre, too – as is Abby’s band of antiheroes heading to Jackson for no particular reason whatsoever.
The Last of Us season two drops on April 13 in full – are you going to binge watch this one? Let me know in the comments or over on the Insider Gaming forum.

Japan’s new 3,000-ton submarine with Harpoon missiles poses threat to China
Japan’s new 3,000-ton submarine with Harpoon missiles poses threat to China
Japan has commissioned a new hunter-killer submarine that can operate in shallow seas to protect borders. Called Raigei or Thunder Whale, the diesel-electric submarine is initially planned to operate around waters near the country’s mainland where ******** and Russian vessels operate.
Built at Kawasaki Heavy Industry’s shipyards in Kobe, the 3,000-ton submarine is the fourth vessel in the country’s Taigei class of vessels.
Prepared at a cost of $470 million, the submarine is powered by diesel-electric engines generating 6,000 hp and has a maximum underwater speed of 20 knots.
Better detection and anti-detection capabilities
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) revealed that Raigei has better detection and anti-detection capabilities compared to the older Taigei class of submarines.
Equipped with lithium-ion batteries in place of lead-acid ones, the vessel uses new Kawasaki 12V 25/31 diesel engines that are suitable with a new snorkel system for enhanced power generation efficiency.
At 84 meters from bow to stern, a displacement of 3,000 tons, and a crew of 70, the Raigei has an ultra-quiet diesel-electric propulsion system that combines a diesel engine and lithium-ion batteries. Its six torpedo tubes can fire the MSDF’s Type-18 torpedoes and also launch the Harpoon all-weather anti-shipping missiles from below the surface, reported SCMP.
Although the submarine isn’t nuclear powered, however, reports revealed that the vessel can meet Japan’s maritime needs.
New combat management system
The submarine also employs a new combat management system (CMS) combining advanced integrated sensors, command-and-control, and weapon engagement systems. In addition, it adopts an enhanced snorkel system to reduce signatures, and a new-generation sonar system based on fiber-optic array technology to enhance detection capability, reported Naval News.
Additionally, the Taigei-class is the first being equipped with a new domestically produced non-penetrating periscope manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric.
Lithium batteries used in the submarines also improves its operational flexibility, underwater endurance when compared to conventional vessels.
Six torpedo tubes bolsters vessel’s offensive capabilities
The submarine has ZQQ-8 sonar suite, which is an upgraded version of the ZQQ-7 system used in the preceding Soryu-class submarines.
The vessel has six 533mm HU-606 torpedo tubes that can launch Type 18 torpedoes and UGM-84L Harpoon Block II anti-ship missiles, which have a range of approximately 248 kilometers. With such weapon systems, the submarine can hit the targets beyond visual range.
Electronic warfare and countermeasure systems
The vessel’s offensive capabilities against both surface and subsurface threats could pose a major challenge to China. The submarine is also equipped with electronic warfare and countermeasure systems that bolsters its survivability against attacks and detection.
The Raigei has been assigned to the 1st Submarine Squadron of Submarine Flotilla 1, stationed at the Kure Base in Hiroshima Prefecture. It will play a critical role in Japan’s maritime security strategy, particularly in response to increasing naval activities in the region.
With the ******** Navy expected to expand its presence in the Western Pacific, Japanese submarines, known for their stealth capabilities, are anticipated to play a key role in monitoring and deterring potential threats.

Nigeria seeks to cash in on soaring cocoa prices
Nigeria seeks to cash in on soaring cocoa prices
Nigeria is looking to become a ******* player in the cocoa bean market (PIUS UTOMI EKPEI)
Booming cocoa prices are stirring interest in turning Nigeria into a ******* player in the sector, with hopes of challenging top producers Ivory Coast and Ghana, where crops have been ravaged by climate change and disease.
Nigeria has struggled to diversify its oil-dependent economy but investors have taken another look at cocoa beans after global prices soared to a record $12,000 per tonne in December.
“The farmers have never had it so good,” Patrick Adebola, executive director at the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, told AFP.
More than a dozen local firms have expressed interest in investing in or expanding their production this year, while the British government’s development finance arm recently poured $40.5 million into ********* agribusiness company Johnvents.
Nigeria is the world’s seventh biggest cocoa bean producer, producing more than 280,000 tonnes in 2023, according to the most recent data compiled by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization.
The government has set an ambitious production target of 500,000 tonnes for the 2024-2025 season, which would move it into fourth place behind Ivory Coast, Ghana and Indonesia.
Adebola doubts Nigeria can reach the target this season, but he believes it is feasible in the next few years as there is rising interest in rehabilitating old plantations or establishing new ones.
He said ********* growers are much more exposed to the highs and lows of the global cocoa market than their peers in Ivory Coast and Ghana as prices are regulated in those countries.
Cocoa futures contracts in New York have fallen from their December record but they remain high at more than $8,000 per tonne. Cocoa prices typically ranged between $2,000 and $3,000 before the recent surge.
“Individuals are going into cocoa production at every level… to make sure they also enjoy the current price,” said Comrade Adeola Adegoke, president of the Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria.
– ‘Full-sun’ monocrop –
Ivory Coast is by far the world’s top grower, producing more than two million tonnes of cocoa beans in 2023, followed by Ghana at 650,000 tonnes.
But the two countries had poor harvests last year as crops were hit by bad weather and disease, causing a supply shortage that sent global prices to all-time highs.
Nigeria’s cocoa has largely been spared so far from the worst effects of climate change, but expanding the crop could carry environmental risks.
The government has stepped up efforts to promote the long-unregulated sector via the National Cocoa Management Committee, which was established in 2022 to regulate the industry and support farmers.
Story Continues
But agriculture modernisation efforts have encouraged the development of “full-sun” monocrop plantations that only focus on growing cocoa beans, without the use of companion plants or trees.
A recent study in the journal Agroforestry Systems has raised concerns about this approach, saying monocrop farming can be less sustainable compared growing the bean alongside shade trees, promoting biodiversity and improving environmental health.
– Land and money? –
Scaling up the sector could also prove challenging because much of Nigeria’s cocoa is grown by small-scale farmers.
Peter Okunde, a farmer in Ogun state, told AFP he lacks both the capital and land to expand his four-hectare (10-acre) cocoa plantation.
Land “is the major instrument farmers need… and the money to develop it”, said Okunde, 49.
But John Alamu, group managing director of Johnvents, told CNBC Africa this week that “the problem is not land area”.
Noting that Nigeria has 1.4 million hectares dedicated to cocoa production — more than Ghana’s 1.1 million, he told the broadcaster a more holistic approach was needed.
“These are things (other) governments have used to support farmers: provision of seedlings, training on good agronomic practices, a real focus on sustainable agriculture,” he said.
“These are key things that will be responsible to take Nigeria back to its leadership position.”

Argentine city of Bahía Blanca hit by deadly floods after storm
Argentine city of Bahía Blanca hit by deadly floods after storm
At least 10 people have died in floods in the Argentine port city of Bahía Blanca, following torrential rains.
Eight hours of non-stop rainfall destroyed roads and bridges on Friday, flooding buildings and leaving large parts of the city without electricity.
More than 1,100 people had to leave their homes and newborn babies were evacuated from a hospital.
On Saturday city officials warned that the death toll could rise. The provincial government said it was sending helicopters and ambulances as well as food and water, while the coast guard was helping in the rescue effort.
Authorities said more than 400mm (15.7 inches) of rain had fallen on Bahía Blanca on Friday. The city normally receives about 600-650mm of rain a year.
Images shared on social media showed cars being carried off by raging flood waters.
Bahía Blanca, a city with a population of over 330,000, is a major port in the south-western part of Buenos Aires province.
Provincial government minister Carlos Bianco told local radio: “We have to rebuild a city. There are people who lost everything.”

Ukrainian family reunited after visa changes reversed
Ukrainian family reunited after visa changes reversed
Andy Jones/BBC
Ivan and Olesia are now living with their children Kyrylo and Oleksandra in Kent
In January visa changes which prevented Ukrainians from bringing their children to join them in the *** were reversed, giving hundreds of families hope they could finally be reunited.
Ivan Vitsyn and his wife Olesia Aladko had been preparing for months for their children to join them in the ***.
The family are from the Kharkiv region of eastern Ukraine, close to the Russian border, and had left their seven-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter with Ivan’s parents while they found a suitable home for them to live.
The parents – who came to the *** in May 2023 as strawberry pickers on seasonal worker visas – had planned to act as sponsors for their children under the Homes for Ukraine scheme, which allows people in the *** to host those fleeing the war.
Originally living in a caravan, it was several months before they found a family home to rent.
But in February last year – without warning – the previous Conservative government changed eligibility rules so only British or Irish citizens or those with the right to live in the *** permanently could act as sponsors.
“We worked so hard to prepare to reunite with the kids and then overnight we were not able to,” says Ivan, speaking through a translator.
“The dream was shattered to pieces, we didn’t know what to do.”
Meanwhile, their children were stuck in Ukraine, living alongside the sounds of explosions, just 50km (31 miles) from the battlefield.
The pair tried desperately without success to find a British sponsor for their children.
Instead they were faced with scammers asking for thousands of pounds in exchange for their help.
Eventually they were put in touch with the charity Settled, which provides help to Ukrainians with the visa process.
The charity advised applying for a visa naming themselves as sponsors, despite the new rules, in the hope the Home Office would make an exception.
But their application was left in limbo, with no decision, so it could not be challenged.
“Every day we checked our email,” Ivan says, describing the wait as “painful”.
Family handout
Oleksandra, 10, and Kyrylo, seven, were living with their grandparents in Ukraine
Then in January, the government announced it was reversing the changes brought in under the Conservatives, so Ukrainians could once again sponsor their children to join them in the ***.
When Ivan and Olesia received an email confirming their children’s visas had been approved they were overjoyed.
“I cannot explain that feeling,” says Ivan. “It was the best feeling in the world.”
Settled has supported a number of Ukrainian families like Ivan and Olesia, who are now starting to get their applications approved.
But others hoping to bring relatives such as siblings or parents remain separated.
Although Ukraine has signalled its willingness to enter peace negotiations, with the US pushing for an end to the war, the *** has given Ukrainians the right to apply to stay in the country for a further 18 months.
While Ivan hopes his family can return to Ukraine one day, he adds: “Even if the war stopped tomorrow there is no certainty for our region.”
For Olesia, having her children with her means she can now start to rebuild their lives in the ***.
“There is probably no other feeling like having your children beside you. You don’t worry; you don’t start your day by reading the news about what happened in Ukraine, where there were attacks,” she says.
“You fall asleep peacefully and wake up peacefully because your children are next to you, and nothing else is needed.”

Albany vintage car owners tackle fourth Variety WA car cruise for a cause, set for drive through Narrogin
Albany vintage car owners tackle fourth Variety WA car cruise for a cause, set for drive through Narrogin
Variety WA’s iconic fundraiser for car collectors is gearing up for 2025, with Albany fundraisers taking on their fourth cruise for a cause with more than $16,000 raised for the WA charity.
The “Wind, Wheat and Waves” Creative Car Cruise will take up to 18 fundraising teams on a four-day cruise through the Wheatbelt, Great Southern and South West regions, making pit stops to deliver Variety grants to regional towns and schools along the way, this year including John Butler Primary College and Bindoon Primary School.
The popular cruise for a cause will start on Thursday, March 13 in Joondalup and travel through Bindoon, Toodyay, Beverley, Narrogin and Boyup Brook to end up in Margaret River on Sunday, March 16.
Fundraisers are encouraged to raise or donate $3000 before the event.
Albany residents Renae and Aaron St Jack will join the cruise for their fourth year in their 1970 Ford Mustang, joining Albany friends Grant and Peta Wells in their 1932 Ford Tudor who will be tackling their fifth cruise.
The St Jacks have been fundraising since mid-2024 with sausage sizzles at Bunnings and local community events, raising more than $16,000 for Variety over their four years participating in the cruise.
Ms St Jack said the best part of the cruise was meeting the people their donations were helping.
“We drive a different route every year, so there’s always something new to see and new people to meet,” she said.
“We’re happy to support a good cause and have some fun along the way.
“Variety do a great job with raising money and helping people out all over WA, so we’re glad to represent the Great Southern and everyone who’s donated to the cause down here and also those who are getting some of the money from Variety to help them along.”
2025 celebrates Variety’s 50th year of operation in Australia, and Variety WA chief executive Chris Chatterton said the car cruise brought together some of the State’s most dedicated fundraisers for the charity.
“Some of our drivers this year will have participated in 14 Creative Car Cruises over the years, raising many thousands of dollars to make a difference to kids in need,” he said.
“We at Variety are so very grateful to our fabulous committee and dedicated participants for making such a big difference especially at this difficult time for families.”

Next James Bond should stay British, Pierce Brosnan says
Next James Bond should stay British, Pierce Brosnan says

Pierce Brosnan in GoldenEye, his first Bond film, in 1995
Actor Pierce Brosnan has said it is a “given” that the next James Bond should be British.
In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph, the former Bond also said he thought it was the “right decision” for the franchise’s long-standing producers to hand creative control to Amazon.
“It takes great courage for them to let go,” said Brosnan, who is Irish.
“I hope that [Amazon] handles the work and the character with dignity and imagination and respect.”
The choice of Daniel Craig’s successor will be a decision for Amazon MGM Studios.
James Norton, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James – who are all English – are among the bookmakers’ favourites to fill Craig’s shoes.
Bond has been played by two non-British actors in the past – *********** George Lazenby as well as Irishman Brosnan – but 007 has never been an American, and among the names mooted for the role is California-born Austin Butler.
Other non-British names that have been suggested include Irish stars Paul Mescal, Cillian Murphy and Aidan Turner, or *********** Jacob Elordi.
Under the deal announced last month, Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson will remain co-owners of the franchise but Amazon MGM Studios “will gain creative control”.
Brosnan, 71, told the Telegraph: “History has been passed on and I’m very proud to have been part of the history and the legacy of Bond and the movies I made with Barbara and Michael.”

Brosnan, now 71, gave his interview to the Telegraph as he launched a new art project featuring his drawings
It is not clear when the next Bond will be announced – and there is still no timescale for when the next film will be made.
The last film in the franchise, No Time To Die in 2021, was Craig’s last.
But given how much time it takes to make a blockbuster movie, the gap between No Time To Die and the next film could break the six-year record for the longest ******* between Bond releases.
Pierce Brosnan starred in four Bond films from 1995’s GoldenEye until 2002’s Die Another Day.

Reds rolled as Crusaders restore Super order
Reds rolled as Crusaders restore Super order
The Crusaders have restored Super Rugby order in Christchurch, running in six tries to beat an erratic Queensland Reds side 43-19.
Les Kiss’s men ended a 12-year losing streak in the New Zealand city last year and returned confident of improving to 3-0 in this campaign.
But they were made to pay for overplaying their hand, often while attempting to run out of their own defence, as the hosts punished them with six tries inside 42 minutes on Sunday.
“Incredibly disappointing; some really good patches out there but too many times … our own worst enemies,” co-captain Tate McDermott said.
“We have to own that but it’s not the end of the world, there’s not much in it.”
The Reds will attempt to return to Brisbane on Monday, having been away from home while the region received heavy winds and ongoing rain that’s left parts of the city flooded courtesy of ex-tropical cyclone Alfred.
Weather permitting, their next assignment will be the unbeaten NSW Waratahs at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday.
McDermott said Queensland’s ball security and decision making needed to improve.
“I know there’s a lot on the scoreboard, but a couple of breakaway tries are easy fixes for us,” he said.
“Plenty of times were were in a good position and would chance our hand with a 50-50 offload and find ourselves back down the other end.”
Crusader Sevu Reece also scored a first-half double while Cullen Grace opened the scoring with a clever raid straight through the centre of the ruck as the home side improved to 2-1 after a round-three bye.
There were flashes of brilliance when forwards Josh Canham and Alex Hodgman found open space and set up tries that kept the Reds in the hunt.
But they were offset by errors and cheap turnovers, as Crusaders fullback Will Jordan scored twice in four minutes before halftime to open a 29-7 lead.
Harry Wilson’s try before the break was cause for optimism but it was erased immediately after the restart.
Reds No.10 Harry McLaughlin-Phillips’s clearance kick was smothered and Christian Lio-******* showed good hands to grab a loose ball and spin over for a 36-14 lead that all-but shut out the Reds.
Reds winger Lachie Anderson scored down the right edge after setting up the play with a deft chip and chase down the left flank.
The visitors had a chance to edge closer but there was no way through the Crusaders’ defence, with Levi Aumua icing the performance with an 80th-minute try converted by former Reds playmaker James O’Connor.
“The way the game’s being refereed and played … high tempo, there’s a lot of back and forth, turnovers, big efforts required,” Jordan said.
“I love playing open, free-flowing footy. The standard so far, the competition among the team’s been great, it’s great to be a part of it.”

Formula 1: Reigning world champion Max Verstappen concedes Red Bull in uphill battle at *********** Grand Prix
Formula 1: Reigning world champion Max Verstappen concedes Red Bull in uphill battle at *********** Grand Prix
Despite not completing a single practice lap in the Formula One season, reigning world champion Max Verstappen has conceded victory at the campaign-opening *********** Grand Prix a week out from the race.
The four-time world champion made a stellar start to his season in 2024, winning seven of the first 10 races, but believes a far more sobering outcome is more likely this time around.
“I don’t think we can fight for the win already in Melbourne,” Verstappen told motorsport.com.
Red Bull was well down on the pace of McLaren, who closed last season with blistering form to claim the Constructor’s title and make a fist of the Driver’s championship with Englishman Lando Norris, during testing in Bahrain last month.
Verstappen suggested the car would be “better in Melbourne than in Bahrain”; however, he showed little confidence in competing with the team in Papaya.
“At the moment, only one (team are contending for wins), and that team is orange,” the 27-year-old Dutchman said.
“That’s a very nice colour, of course, but from our side, we still have work to do. Other teams want to see some improvements as well, I think, so at the moment, one team is clearly in front.
“If you look at the lap times (from testing), then I think McLaren is the favourite. On our side, not everything went completely smoothly, but on the other hand, we have some ideas on how to improve.”

It’s good news for local hope Oscar Piastri, who drives alongside Norris at McLaren.
The 23-year-old from Melbourne will be confident of pushing for at least a podium at his home track but will strive for a maiden home Grand Prix triumph around the streets of Albert Park.
Alan Jones was the last *********** to win a home race while no Aussie has featured on the podium since 1983.
The race is set for Sunday, March 16.

Girrawheen house fire sparked by lithium-ion battery from e-scooter
Girrawheen house fire sparked by lithium-ion battery from e-scooter
A home in Girrawheen has been damaged after a fire was sparked by a lithium-ion battery from an e-scooter.
Department of Fire and Emergency Services crews were called to the property on Morgan Way just after 3pm on Saturday.
St John WA treated two people at the scene for smoke inhalation.
It is understood the fire started outside on the patio and spread inside via the kitchen.
About 90 per cent of the home was smoked logged and 10 per cent of the property fire-damaged. Crews contained the blaze by 3.30pm.
A DFES spokeswoman said it continued to see an increase in fires caused by lithium-ion batteries. So far this year, more than 25 fires have been sparked by lithium-ion batteries.

“Lithium-ion batteries are being produced in their millions each year, so they are becoming far more common in our households,” the spokeswoman said.
“Fires started by exploding batteries are intense and can spread incredibly quickly, making it difficult for firefighters to extinguish.”
