China’s leaders say they are open to talks, but they also made preparations for the higher U.S. tariffs, which have risen 20% since Trump took office seven weeks ago. 2 Days of Clashes and Revenge Killings in Syria Leave More Than 1,000 People Dead 2 Days of Clashes and Revenge Killings in Syria Leave More Than 1,000 People Dead BEIRUT (AP) — The death toll from two days of clashes between Syrian security forces and loyalists of ousted President Bashar Assad and revenge killings that followed has risen to more than 1,000, a war monitoring group said Saturday, making it one of the deadliest acts of violence since Syria’s conflict began 14 years ago. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in addition to 745 civilians killed, mostly in shootings from close distance, 125 government security force members and 148 militants with armed groups affiliated with Assad were killed. It added that electricity and drinking water were cut off in large areas around the city of Latakia. The clashes, which erupted Thursday, marked a major escalation in the challenge to the new government in Damascus, three months after insurgents took authority after removing Assad from power. The government has said that they were responding to attacks from remnants of Assad’s forces and blamed “individual actions” for the rampant violence. Retribution killings between Sunnis and Alawites The revenge killings that started Friday by Sunni ******* gunmen loyal to the government against members of Assad’s ********* Alawite sect are a major blow to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the faction that led the overthrow of the former government. Alawites made up a large part of Assad’s support base for decades. Residents of Alawite villages and towns spoke to The Associated Press about killings during which gunmen shot Alawites, the majority of them men, in the streets or at the gates of their homes. Many homes of Alawites were looted and then set on fire in different areas, two residents of Syria’s coastal region told the AP from their hideouts. They asked that their names not be made public out of fear of being killed by gunmen, adding that thousands of people have fled to nearby mountains for safety. Residents speak of atrocities in one town Residents of Baniyas, one of the towns worst hit by the violence, said bodies were strewn on the streets or left unburied in homes and on the roofs of buildings, and nobody was able to collect them. One resident said that the gunmen prevented residents for hours from removing the bodies of five of their neighbors killed Friday at close range. Ali Sheha, a 57-year-old resident of Baniyas who fled with his family and neighbors hours after the violence broke out Friday, said that at least 20 of his neighbors and colleagues in one neighborhood of Baniyas where Alawites lived, were killed, some of them in their shops, or in their homes. Sheha called the attacks “revenge killings” of the Alawite ********* for the crimes committed by Assad’s government. Other residents said the gunmen included foreign fighters, and militants from neighboring villages and towns. “It was very very bad. Bodies were on the streets,” as he was fleeing, Sheha said, speaking by phone from nearly 20 kilometers (12 miles) away from the city. He said the gunmen were gathering less than 100 meters from his apartment building, firing randomly at homes and residents and in at least one incident he knows of, asked residents for their IDs to check their religion and their sect before killing them. He said the gunmen also burned some homes and stole cars and robbed homes. Death toll has multiplied The Observatory’s chief Rami Abdurrahman said that revenge killings stopped early Saturday. “This was one of the biggest massacres during the Syrian conflict,” Abdurrahman said about the killings of Alawite civilians. The previous figure given by the group was more than 600 dead. No official figures have been released. A ******** was held Saturday afternoon for four Syrian security force members in the northwestern village of Al-Janoudiya after they were killed in the clashes along Syria’s coast. Scores of people attended the ********. Official reports say Syrian forces regaining control Syria’s state news agency quoted an unnamed Defense Ministry official as saying that government forces have regained control of much of the areas from Assad loyalists. It added that authorities have closed all roads leading to the coastal region “to prevent violations and gradually restore stability.” On Saturday morning, the bodies of 31 people killed in revenge attacks the day before in the central village of Tuwaym were laid to rest in a mass grave, residents said. Those killed included nine children and four women, the residents said, sending the AP photos of the bodies draped in white cloth as they were lined in the mass grave. Lebanese legislator Haidar Nasser, who holds one of the two seats allocated to the Alawite sect in parliament, said that people were fleeing from Syria for safety in Lebanon. He said he didn’t have exact numbers. Nasser said that many people were sheltering at the Russian air base in Hmeimim, Syria, adding that the international community should protect Alawites who are Syrian citizens loyal to their country. He said that since Assad’s fall, many Alawites were fired from their jobs and some former soldiers who reconciled with the new authorities were killed. Under Assad, Alawites held top posts in the army and security agencies. The new government has blamed his loyalists for attacks against the country’s new security forces over the past several weeks. France expressed “its deep concern” over recent violence in Syria. Paris “condemns in the strongest possible terms atrocities committed against civilians on the basis of religion grounds and against prisoners,” its foreign ministry said in a statement Saturday. France urged Syrian interim authorities to make sure independent investigations “shed full light on these crimes.” The most recent clashes started when government forces tried to detain a wanted person near the coastal city of Jableh, and were ambushed by Assad loyalists, according to the Observatory. In a newly published paper examining Mr Tate’s long-form posts across his website and Telegram channels, Monash and Coventry University researchers warn his misogynistic rhetoric and expression of conspiracy theories could serve as a “connective tissue” to the realm of far-right politics, including fascist and neo-Nazi politics. Referencing a Tate Telegram post, in which the influencer claims: “Satanists rule the world. Evil child f**kers control the Western world governments”, the researchers argue the link between “wider conspiracist discourses” and rhetoric promoting the dominance of men and the subordination of women meshes the world of the far-right into the world of the manosphere.” Co-author Steven Roberts, speaking with NewsWire this week, warned that youngsters going to Tate for self-help or self-improvement might easily find themselves pushed into “very right-wing content”. There’s something there.” The paper, titled Beyond the Clickbait: Analysing the Masculinist Ideology in Andrew Tate’s Online Written Discourses, assesses 16,029 words across the influencer’s website and 150,288 words across his Telegram channel to stitch together a deeper view of Tate’s thinking, separate from the viral moments that erupt across social media. At its core, the paper warns Tate’s longer-form discourse presents an “ostensibly more banal” form of self-improvement masculinity and his overt misogyny is more subtly intertwined into this project than his viral social media personality might suggest. This, the researchers argue, makes him a particularly insidious force because children and young men will be exposed to toxic ideas alongside a celebration of masculinity that might appear acceptable or improving. “The mechanism is a bit more insidious because it first talks about self-help and quite quickly becomes aggressive, but it’s laced with things that are palatable,” Professor Roberts said. “I think that’s why it’s a problem for parents because we get emails every single day (saying) ‘my kid has fallen into this trap’. “The parents seem to be able to see through it, but the kids are focusing on mainly the other things (such as self-improvement) that are attractive to them, but they’re simultaneously being fed this diet of women hatred and idealising a specific form of masculinity that’s grounded in hierarchy and dominance over other boys and men.” Tate repeatedly celebrates male domination of both men and women in his writing, the paper shows. In one Telegram post, he writes: “Men were born to fight. Every single man fights. He wants to fight, he trains to fight, and he stays awake at night praying for the day he gets to enter the cage and try his very best to hurt somebody. The males who don’t feel this warrior urge, simply are not men.” Professor Roberts warned that Tate’s influence could produce a “swath” of boys bullying other boys. “That’s the most crucial thing I think that we often framing it, it’s about dominance over women, but it wouldn’t surprise me here if we get a whole swath of children, of boys bullying other boys as a result of this type of behaviour because it absolutely valorises dominance over quote unquote ‘weaker kids’,” Professor Roberts said. NewsWire pressed Professor Roberts on whether he believed there was a healthy form of traditionalist masculinity, or whether it was possible to have stable “self-help guides” for lost or impressionable young men. “I don’t think that the case is we cannot have self-help that’s useful for men,” he replied. “I think that’s why the appeal is blurry … I’m a dad of a six-year-old boy and I would want to teach my kid that it’s a good thing to make his bed and work hard and try hard and try to be the best version of himself. “And even some of the kind of more benevolent sexist kind of points around being a protector. “We can see why that will have appeal to some people in terms of, if not wanting to be the breadwinner, wanting to be a contributor, wanting to have material wealth because you can support and raise a family together. “In itself it’s not problematic, but the idea of the breadwinner having to be the man and you’re less of a man if you can’t do that is where it starts to get murky.” The paper reveals that only 11 per cent of Mr Tate’s long-form writing focuses on women and femininity. “It’s essentially about masculinity and a particular form of masculinity and then a particular kind of demonisation of the very boys he wants to pay him,” Professor Roberts said. With a thickness of 5.5mm, the iPhone 17 Air will most likely emerge as the thinnest phone in the market. These instantly recognisable weapons were firm favourites when Verdansk was rolling around in Warzone between 2020 and 2021, and it looks like they’re coming back. Hit the Nostalgia It was mentioned recently that if Verdansk’s return to Warzone is a flop, Warzone itself could be on the rocks and scheduled for closure. At the very least, Activision will scale back resources and prepare to keep Warzone afloat with a skeleton crew, as the downfall of the battle royale has been unravelling over the last couple of years. When season three arrives in Call of Duty next month, following a sizeable delay, it should bring with it the original Verdansk map from 2020. Defiant CBS suddenly comes out swinging in $20bn Trump lawsuit Defiant CBS suddenly comes out swinging in $20bn Trump lawsuit CBS has filed a motion to dismiss President Donald Trump’s $20 billion lawsuit over former Vice President Kamala Harris’ 60 Minutes interview last year, calling the suit an “affront to the First Amendment without basis in law or fact.” The president had previously claimed the outlet edited the interview in such a way as to attempt to make him look bad to voters, allegedly contributing to “voter interference.” He filed the lawsuit in October, months before taking office, prompting CBS to publicly release the unedited video of Harris last month in a bid to demonstrate there was nothing unusual or manipulative in the editing. All broadcast interviews are edited, if only for length to fit the format of a program. The suit by Trump is unusual in that it appears to aim at control of editing decisions made by news organizations. Trump filed suit in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Texas, stating the outlet’s actions violated the Texas Deceptive Practices Trade Act, a law that regulates commercial business practices. CBS responded Thursday, stating the suit lacked the proper venue as well as personal and subject-matter jurisdiction. “Plaintiffs President Donald J. Trump and Representative Ronny Jackson, public officials at the highest ranks of our government, seek to punish a news organization for constitutionally protected editorial judgments they do not like,” CBS attorneys wrote in court documents. “This lawsuit is an affront to the First Amendment and is without basis in law or fact.” They “not only ask for $20 billion in damages but also seek an order directing how a news organization may exercise its editorial judgment in the future,” the filing added. “The First Amendment stands resolutely against these demands.” If the case is not dismissed, attorneys also asked for the lawsuit to be transferred to the Southern District of New York, where the headquarters of CBS News is located. In a statement to Axios, Trump attorney Ed Paltzik said that the president is “committed to holding those who traffic in fake news, hoaxes and lies to account. CBS and Paramount committed the worst kind of election interference and fraud in the closing days of the most important presidential election in history. President Trump will pursue this vital matter to its just and rightful conclusion.” Federal Communications Commissioner Brendan Carr, appointed by Trump, is investigating the matter. The network’s stinging attack was a surprise. CBS has been considering settling the suit to avoid further delaying a merger with Skydance Media in an $8 billion deal, which regulators in the Trump administration need to approve.
