  2. Iran criticises ‘bullying countries’ after Trump letter demanding talks Iran criticises ‘bullying countries’ after Trump letter demanding talks Iran’s Supreme leader has criticised “bullying” countries in an apparent response to Donald Trump’s comments that he had sent a letter to Iran demanding negotiations over its nuclear programme. Trump said on Friday he had warned Tehran in a letter it could face military action unless it agreed to talks for a nuclear deal. In a furious response on Saturday, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran would not negotiate with “bullying governments” insisting on talks. His regime has rapidly advanced its nuclear programme in recent years, the UN’s monitor says. Trump has said he wants to strike a new deal with Iran to prevent it from developing its nuclear programme further. On Friday he said he had offered Iran a chance to negotiate or risk its nuclear programme being targeted. “I’ve written them a letter, saying I hope you’re going to negotiate because if we have to go in militarily it’s going to be a terrible thing for them,” Trump told Fox Business on Friday. “There are two ways Iran can be handled – militarily, or you make a deal,” Trump said. “I would prefer to make a deal, because I am not looking to hurt Iran.” Iran’s Ayatollah appeared to respond to Trump’s statements in a Ramadan meeting with officials on Saturday, reported by local media. Khamenei did not name the US but said “some bully governments insist on negotiations.” “Their negotiations are not aimed at solving problems, they aim at domination,” he said according to Iranian media. “The issue is not just the nuclear issue. They are setting new expectations that these new expectations will definitely not be met on the part of Iran.” In December, the head of the UN nuclear watchdog said Iran’s decision to begin producing significantly more highly enriched uranium was “very worrisome”. Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said Iran was increasing its stockpile of uranium enriched to 60%, just below the level of purity needed for a nuclear weapon. Tehran has denied accusation it is building nuclear weapons, emphasising instead that its programme has peaceful aims. Iran had previously agreed to limits on its nuclear programme under the 2015 Iran nuclear accord, an agreement signed with the US, ***, France, China, Russia and Germany in return for sanctions relief. But during his first term in office, Trump withdrew the US from the deal and reinstated US sanctions on Iran. In the years since the collapse of the deal, Iran has accelerated its nuclear programme, accelerating its enrichment of uranium. It now has stocks that are near weapons grade, analysts say. The conflicts in the Middle East this past year have also heightened nuclear tensions. President Trump has said he would give Israel the the green light to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, after Israel and Iran exchanged attacks last year linked to the wars in Gaza and Lebanon. Iran’s air defence systems – which protect its nuclear facilities – were damaged in Israeli strikes on military targets. Iran’s government is also under economic pressure from Western sanctions and has seen nationwide protests during the past few years over both social and economic grievances. Iran is due to hold annual joint naval drills with Russia and China on Monday, in the Iranian port of Chabahar. 10. Tesla shares on the decline since Elon Musk got to Washington Tesla shares on the decline since Elon Musk got to Washington Tesla’s stock has never had a stretch this red. For seven straight weeks, since Elon Musk went to Washington to join the Trump administration, shares in his automaker have declined, closing Friday at $US270.48 ($428). It’s the longest such losing streak for Tesla in its 15 years as a public company. Tesla shares finished the week down more than 10 per cent and at their lowest level since November 5, Election Day, when they closed at $US251.44. Since the stock peaked at almost $US480 on December 17, it has lost well over $US800b in market cap. Several Wall Street firms last week, including Bank of America, Baird and Goldman Sachs, cut their price targets on Tesla. In slashing their target from $US490 to $3US80, analysts at Bank of America cited concerns about the company’s falling new vehicle sales and the lack of a recent update from Musk on a “low-cost model.” Goldman Sachs, which cut its price target on the stock to $US320 from $US345, also pointed to falling electric vehicle sales for Tesla in the first two months of the year across several markets in Europe, China and parts of the US. The Goldman analysts noted that Tesla faces “a tough competitive environment for FSD” in China, where key competitors “do not generally require a separate software purchase for smart driving features.” FSD, or Full Self-Driving (Supervised), is Tesla’s partially automated driving system, which the company sells as a premium option in the U.S. Baird added Tesla to its “bearish fresh picks” this week, with analysts at the firm writing that “production downtime” will complicate “the supply-side of the equation” for Tesla as the company shifts to manufacturing the new version of its Model Y SUV. But Wall Street isn’t just concerned about fundamental metrics such as sales and production figures. Investors are also trying to assess how much Musk’s politics and work in the White House will pressure Tesla, and for how long. “Musk’s involvement with the Trump administration adds uncertainty to the demand-side,” Baird analysts wrote. Before taking on his role as adviser to President Donald Trump and as leader of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, Musk was already heading up his many private ventures, including artificial intelligence startup xAI, social media company X, and aerospace and defense contractor SpaceX. Concerned bulls Now Musk, the world’s wealthiest person, has become the public face of the Trump administration’s effort to dramatically reduce the federal government’s workforce, spending and capacity. Meanwhile, he continues to post incendiary political rhetoric on X, slamming judges whose decisions he doesn’t like, and promoting false Kremlin talking points about Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Anti-Musk and anti-Tesla sentiment have been rising in the U.S. and Europe, with an outburst of protests and suspected criminal acts of arson and vandalism at Tesla facilities. Even the most bullish analysts, and many fans, have had to acknowledge the impact of Musk’s politics on the desirability of Tesla and its products to a wide swath of customers and investors. EV advocates at Cleantechnica, which has long promoted Tesla on its site, ran an ethics-focused column Thursday pondering whether Tesla owners should sell their cars and whether the Tesla board should fire Musk as CEO. Musk and Tesla didn’t respond to requests for comment. In a note out Friday, Wedbush Securities’ Dan Ives wrote, “Tesla bulls find themselves with their back against the wall facing global negative sentiment around Musk/DOGE and the Trump Administration.” He called it a “gut check moment for the Tesla bulls (including ourselves).” Wedbush said it’s using the sell-off as an opportunity to add Tesla to its “Best Ideas” list, and set its 12-month price target at $US550. 14. Giants backs Finn Callaghan as AFL star on the rise Giants backs Finn Callaghan as AFL star on the rise No Tom Green? No worries. Losing their star ball winner to injury proved no obstacle for GWS, with young gun Finn Callaghan standing tallest to help them to a 52-point AFL thumping of Collingwood. Callaghan ran rampant against the Magpies with two goals, 33 disposals, seven clearances and a game-high total of 12 score involvements with 726 metres gained. Off-contract at the end of the season, the 21-year-old had reportedly been offered a monster $17 million, 10-year deal from St Kilda. He opted to remain at the Giants on a four-year contract extension to the end of the 2029 season. Giants coach Adam Kingsley could only laud the highly-rated midfielder for his outing against the Magpies, believing the best is yet to come. “That’s what we believe he’s going to be like and even better,” Kingsley said. “He had a lot of the ball today, but it was really the way that he used his possessions, his ability to run and carry – he stood out. “He’s a very, very nice player to watch when he’s playing like that. We hope he’s more like that.” Kingsley was impressed with Callaghan’s ability to hit the scoreboard while dictating the tempo at the contest, given star forwards Jesse Hogan (thumb) and Jake ********* (hamstring) were also out of the side. Callaghan’s two-goal haul against the Magpies matches his total last season, having only kicked a career-high of three in one season. Giants ruck Kieren Briggs will join Green (calf), Hogan and ********* on the sidelines with a neck injury and concussion. Briggs was stretchered off the field against the Magpies and taken to hospital after a collision with teammate Sam Taylor in the first quarter. The Giants were also without suspended quartet Jake Riccardi, Harvey Thomas, Toby McMullin and Joe Fonti. “He (Callaghan) hasn’t traditionally been a goalkicker for us,” Kingsley said. “We certainly encourage him to be hard and tough around the contest and he was certainly that. “We encourage him to use his legs. He did that. “His ability to hit the scoreboard is a little bit untapped for us at the moment, so it was nice for him to feel what that is and hopefully he continues to do that.” Hard and tough was the name of the game for the Giants, with Kingsley calling on his players to play with anger and “controlled violence” before the match. “For us to be at our best, we have to be that sort of midfield,” Kingsley said post-match. “We have to compete. We have to be really physical around the stoppage and get after it. “For the most part, we were pretty good (against Collingwood). “We had patches where we weren’t but we continue to try and minimise those patches where we’re not physical. “I was really pleased with our stoppage work today.” Source link #Giants #backs #Finn #Callaghan #AFL #star #rise Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  16. NZ win toss, bat first in Champions Trophy final NZ win toss, bat first in Champions Trophy final New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has won the coin toss and chosen to bat first against India in the 2025 Champions Trophy final. It is the 15th consecutive toss India have lost since the 2023 Cricket World Cup final in November 2023 – the longest such run for any team in one-day internationals. India are the only unbeaten side in the tournament after wins against Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand in the group phase, then Australia in the semi-final. All matches were played in Dubai after the Indian government refused permission for its team go to “hosts” Pakistan on security grounds. New Zealand beat Pakistan in Karachi, then Bangladesh in Rawalpindi, before making the trip to Dubai to play India. The ****** Caps then returned to Pakistan, where they beat South Africa in the second semi-final in Lahore. Both sides have previously won this tournament. India’s last success came in 2013 and they were runners-up to Pakistan in 2017. They also shared the trophy with Sri Lanka in 2002 after a rain-affected two-day final. New Zealand won the Champions Trophy (then the ICC Knockout Trophy) in 2000, beating India in the final in Nairobi, Kenya. It remains the only limited-overs ICC trophy in the ****** Caps’ cabinet. Pacer Matt Henry, who leads the tournament with 10 wickets in four matches, has been ruled out with a shoulder injury sustained in the semi-final. Medium-pace allrounder Nathan Smith is his replacement in the only change for New Zealand. India have fielded an unchanged side from the semi-final, again opting for four spin options. The pitch at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium is dry and should aid spin as the game progresses. There is little chance of evening dew as the ambient temperature has shot up in the UAE in the past week. If there is any, it will aid the chasing side. 19. Internet shutdowns at record high in Africa as access ‘weaponised’ | Internet Internet shutdowns at record high in Africa as access ‘weaponised’ | Internet Digital blackouts reached a record high in 2024 in Africa as more governments sought to keep millions of citizens off the internet than in any other ******* over the last decade. A report released by the internet rights group Access Now and #KeepItOn, a coalition of hundreds of civil society organisations worldwide, found there were 21 shutdowns in 15 African countries, surpassing the existing record of 19 shutdowns in 2020 and 2021. Authorities in Comoros, Guinea-Bissau and Mauritius joined repeat offenders such as Burundi, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea and Kenya. Guinea, Nigeria, Senegal and Tanzania were also on the list. But perpetrators also included militias and other non-state actors. Telecommunication and internet service providers who shut services based on government orders are also complicit in violating people’s rights, said Felicia Anthonio, the #KeepItOn campaign manager at Access Now, citing the UN guiding principles on business and human rights. The details showed that most of the shutdowns were imposed as a response to conflicts, protests and political instability. There were also restrictions during elections. The trend was replicated across the world with more internet shutdowns and in more countries: 296 shutdowns across 54 countries, compared with 283 shutdowns in 39 countries the previous year. Access Now said the figures were the worst since it started keeping records in 2016 and that the rise reflected “a world where internet access is consistently weaponised, restricted, and precarious”. “Behind each of the 1,754 shutdowns since 2016 is a story of people and communities cut off from the world and each other, often during political upheaval, unrest, violence and war,” the report said. At least five shutdowns in Africa had been imposed for more than a year by the end of 2024, according to Access Now. As of early 2025, the social network Meta was still restricted in Uganda, despite authorities engaging with its representatives. On the Equatorial Guinean island of Annobon, internet and cell services have been cut off since an August 2024 protest over environmental concerns and isolation from the rest of the country. The increase in shutdowns led the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights to pass a landmark resolution in March 2024 to help reverse the trend. skip past newsletter promotion Nesrine Malik and Jason Okundaye deliver your weekly dose of ****** life and culture from around the world Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. It is difficult for us to tell if the resolution is yielding results already, but we did see authorities in countries like Mauritius and South Sudan [in January 2025] backtrack or reverse shutdown orders.” Source link #Internet #shutdowns #record #high #Africa #access #weaponised #Internet Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  23. Magpies say Daicos is in good nick after injury scare Magpies say Daicos is in good nick after injury scare Collingwood coach Craig McRae is confident AFL superstar Nick Daicos was only troubled by cramps in their opening-round defeat to GWS. Daicos looked to have suffered a leg injury after an innocuous contest with Giants tagger Toby Bedford in the third quarter at Engie Stadium on Sunday. Playing through the pain with the Magpies having already activated their substitute, Daicos struggled to recapture his brilliant best. He finished with 17 disposals and four clearances as the Giants steamrolled to a 52-point win. But McRae refused to sweat on the star midfielder’s fitness, saying Daicos was only battling cramps. Daicos was far from the only injury concern for the visitors, with Jeremy Howe passing a concussion test after a collision with teammate Reef McInnes. Livewire forward Bobby Hill also sent a scare through the Magpies camp with a suspected hamstring problem, but he was also only cramping, while defender Isaac Quaynor shook off a heavy knock. Substitute Ned Long had joined the fray in the third quarter after Will Hoskin-Elliott picked up a back complaint. “All able to finish the game out. They should be fine,” McRae said. “He (Daicos) pulled up fine. It’s just a matter of now getting himself ready. “We were aware that Nick was cramping at halftime. “If he comes off the ground, there’s another load for others. “We’re just, within reason, trying to look after him and look after others.” McRae could not be as optimistic about midfielder Jordan De Goey’s return from a knee injury. De Goey has been limited after suffering bone bruising on the top of his fibula in a clash of knees at training. “It’s touch-and-go at the moment,” McRae said. “Jordy’s a pretty important player, pretty good player. “There’s always that excitement for what’s potentially a solution. “He’s got a bit of work to do to get up, but we’ll see how that goes.” Collingwood will at least be able to welcome Dan Houston (suspension) to the side for next round’s clash against his former team Port Adelaide. “We’ve got to lick our wounds and move quickly,” McRae said. “We’re excited to get back to our fans, back to the MCG. Dan Houston is ready to go playing his old team. “This is AFL footy – you play good opposition away from home and in hot conditions. “We’re well and truly prepared for this.” Source link #Magpies #Daicos #good #nick #injury #scare Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  24. Trump says he’s ending Public Service Loan Forgiveness for nonprofits involved with ‘improper’ activities Trump says he’s ending Public Service Loan Forgiveness for nonprofits involved with ‘improper’ activities President Donald Trump said on Friday he would sign an executive order banning student borrowers from the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program if they work for nonprofits that engage in “********” or “improper” activities. Though light on details — a copy of the order had yet to be posted on the White House website Friday afternoon — the plan appears to be the latest strike by the White House at pro-************ groups and charity organizations opposed to his policies. Speaking before the cameras, a White House aide said it would penalize employees of nonprofits involved in “******** immigration or foreign terrorist organizations or otherwise law-breaking activities.” The administration pulled $400 million in funding from Columbia University Friday, citing its alleged failure to handle antisemitism on its campus. Earlier this week, Trump said he would cut off grants to universities that failed to halt “******** protests.” The PSLF program, which has existed since 2007, offers loan cancellation to borrowers who go to work for a nonprofit or government employer, wiping away their balance after 120 payments. The program erased over $78 billion worth of debt under the Biden administration. Read more: How to apply for Public Service Loan Forgiveness It’s unclear what legal authority Trump is exercising to alter the terms of the program, which his first administration proposed cutting. Using it to penalize groups that merely engage in constitutionally protected speech, such as informing undocumented immigrants of their rights or criticizing Israel, would also raise serious legal concerns. During her confirmation hearing, Secretary of Education Linda McMahon told lawmakers that she would continue implementing PSLF, even if instructed not to — though there was no discussion of narrowing the program’s terms. Some consumer rights groups immediately protested the move. “This is about more than PSLF or ED policy,” Mike Pierce, director of the Student Borrower Protection Center, said. “Donald Trump is weaponizing debt to police speech that does not toe the MAGA party line.
