Tourist helicopter suddenly broke apart and crashed into the Hudson River, NTSB preliminary report finds Tourist helicopter suddenly broke apart and crashed into the Hudson River, NTSB preliminary report finds The sightseeing helicopter that plunged in the Hudson River and killed six people in April “suddenly separated into three major sections,” a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board released Wednesday found. A family of five and the pilot were on a sightseeing excursion on April 10. During the flight they flew a “teardrop pattern south of the Statue of Liberty” and then went north along the east shore of the Hudson River, past the George Washington Bridge before performing a U-turn toward the New Jersey, the NTSB said. The helicopter’s altitude increased to 675 feet before it began a rapid, deadly descent. Several witnesses heard many “loud bangs emanating from the helicopter before it broke up and descended into the river,” according to the NTSB. Three major sections were identified in the wreckage: the fuselage with the engine; the main rotor system with both rotor blades, transmission and roof-beam structure; and the tail ***** which includes the tail rotor. Debris from the helicopter was found submerged in the water but also floating on the surface of the river and on a rooftop near the Hoboken Terminal, a major New Jersey transit hub. No video or data recording devices were in the helicopter. The pilot was wearing computer-augmented sunglasses, which had video and audio recording capability, but the glasses were not recovered. The pilot worked a 10 days on, 10 days off schedule and the ****** occurred during his first day back at work. The flight was his eighth tour excursion of the day on the same helicopter. The preliminary report does not draw a conclusion as to what caused the ******. A probable cause will be determined in the NTSB’s final report which usually takes about a year to complete. A website run by the Neo-Nazi group described the event as a celebration of the “136th birthday of Uncle A”. Victorino, 48, and Hunter, 38, were sentenced to death in 2006 for the 2004 mass ******* at a home on Telford Lane in Deltona where the victims beaten to death with baseball bats. While their convictions stood, their death sentences were later struck down. Two others who participated in the killings, Michael Salas and Robert Cannon, were sentenced to life in prison. Killed in the massacre were Erin Belanger, 22; Michelle Nathan, 19; Roberto “Tito” Gonzalez, 28; Jonathan Gleason, 17; Francisco “Flaco” Ayo-Roman, 30; and Anthony Vega, 34. A dog was also killed. Victorino and his group beat them with the metal bats, leaving shattered skulls, broken bodies and bloodied walls. Instead, the Fed seems to be waiting alongside investors and business leaders to see when and how potential trade deals shake out. “Jerome Powell sounded like virtually all of the CEOs I heard on earnings calls over the past month,” Chris Grisanti, chief market strategist at MAI Capital Management, told CNBC. “He sees rising uncertainty, and he’s waiting to see what happens before he makes important decisions. It’s like the entire world is caught in that doom loop, and Jerome Powell is no different than the rest of the folks trying to figure out the business cycle.” That waiting ******* is not without risks. The Federal Open Market Committee made changes to its official policy statement , hinting that central bankers may be growing more worried about the labor market and potential stagflation, when growth slows and inflation stays high. “The Committee is attentive to the risks to both sides of its dual mandate and judges that the risks of higher unemployment and higher inflation have risen,” the policy-setting committee said in its statement. Fed Chair Jerome Powell added in his press conference after the two-day meeting ended that there is risk of a “tension” between those two goals. This was the first Fed meeting since President Donald Trump unveiled his far-reaching tariff policy on April 2. Many of those initial import tax rates have since been changed one way or another, but the administration still has not agreed to any new trade deal. U.S. and ******** officials are set to meet in Switzerland this weekend. The central bank seems resigned to wait and see how those discussions play out. The next FOMC meeting comes June 17-18. “Based on this statement, Powell has thrown the ball back into Trump’s court by citing risks ahead. As a result, they will react when there is more clarity. Right now the only way to get that clarity is to get answers and not hopes of fruitful discussions from Washington,” Jay Woods, chief global strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, said in a statement. For his part, Trump has called for the Fed to go ahead and cut rates, given the fact that inflation has eased in some parts of the economy. He has even referred to the Fed chair as “Mr. Too Late.” But Powell on Wednesday knocked down the idea of preemptive rate cuts and said the Fed would wait for economic growth and inflation data to show a clear direction, one way or the other. “It’s not a situation where we can be preemptive, because we actually don’t know what the right responses to the data will be until we see more data,” Powell said. — CNBC’s Alex Harring contributed reporting. The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower judge’s order that said the FTC was not entitled to a preliminary injunction blocking the deal, which closed in 2023. A three-judge panel unanimously ruled that the lower judge had applied the correct legal standards and said the FTC had not shown it was likely to succeed on its claims that the merger would restrict competition. A spokesperson for the FTC declined to comment. Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The decision came in an antitrust lawsuit filed by the Federal Trade Commission in 2022 against Xbox maker Microsoft. The FTC, which enforces antitrust law, separately challenged the merger in an internal administrative action. That proceeding was placed on hold in 2023 during President Joe Biden’s administration, pending the 9th Circuit’s decision. The Activision Blizzard transaction marked the largest-ever acquisition in the video gaming market. The deal closed in late 2023 after competition authorities in the *** approved it. The purchase also faced regulatory scrutiny in other international markets. The FTC’s lawsuit sought an order freezing the Activision transaction while the agency pursued its administrative challenge. The agency claimed the Microsoft-Activision tie-up would allow the merged company to fend off competitors to the Xbox console and to its subscription and cloud-based gaming business. U.S. District Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley had refused to block the acquisition in July 2023, finding that the FTC had not shown Microsoft’s ownership of Activision would “substantially lessen competition in the video game library subscription and cloud gaming markets.” The FTC argued in its appeal that the court applied an overly stringent standard in weighing whether to grant a preliminary injunction. Under the plan, funding for the program — called the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) — would be cut, and seniors instead would receive what the Trump administration is calling “MAHA food boxes” filled with products sourced directly from farmers. The food boxes — whose name stems from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s pledge to “Make America Healthy Again” — could eventually also be rolled out to either “supplant or complement current USDA programs,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture told CBS MoneyWatch in an email. The agency didn’t disclose what other government programs could integrate use of the MAHA food boxes. The USDA administers the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, more commonly known as food stamps. The agency also oversees other food aid programs such as Women, Infants and Children, which is aimed at pregnant women and kids, as well as the National School Lunch program. “Unlike the current approach using food banks, which provide those in need with shelf-stable foods that are high in sodium and other harmful ingredients, MAHA boxes would be filled with commodities sourced from domestic farmers and given directly to American households,” the Trump budget proposal notes. The CSFP helps about 730,000 low-income seniors annually through its $389 million budget, according to the USDA. By comparison, the food-stamp program spent about $100 billion last year to provide assistance to 41 million Americans, according to the USDA. “We have no details” The CSFP is essential for low-income seniors who are struggling to put food on the table, said George Matysik, executive director of Share Food Program, a nonprofit in Philadelphia. He expressed concern about the Trump administration’s plans to replace the CSFP with food boxes, noting the logistical complexity of getting perishable food from farmers directly to older Americans. Another question is whether the foods included in the food boxes would meet the needs of seniors who often need shelf-stable foods because many struggle to get to the store, Matysik said. “What we do know is that the program that we currently have is working, and seniors have come to rely on us,” he said. “We have no details [about logistics of the MAHA food boxes], and this has been a continued challenge that we’ve had with this administration, where decisions are sort of made overnight.” Share Food Program relies on $4.5 million in CSFP funding to provide 32-pound food boxes to more than 7,000 seniors in the Philadelphia region who earn less than roughly $23,000 per year. Matysik disagreed with the Trump administration’s claims that the program provides unhealthy foods to seniors, noting the boxes typically contain products such as canned vegetables, lean proteins and pastas. “For seniors, a lot of times it can be hard to make it out to the grocery store — it can be hard to get those core items that folks need,” he added. “What we do at Share Food Program is take it directly to the doorstep of about 4,500 seniors, so not only are we providing that nutrition, but we’re making it easy on the seniors.” The Trump budget proposal represents a wish list for the current administration, and it isn’t certain that funding for the CSFP would be cut. But the plan comes amid a larger push by the Trump administration to reduce spending on similar programs, such as a decision in March to cut two federal programs that provided about $1 billion in funding to schools and food banks and instead have them source food directly from local farms, ranchers and producers. The Kennedy effect The MAHA food boxes would provide a twofold benefit, the USDA said in an email to CBS MoneyWatch. “MAHA boxes would be more wholesome foods, and similar to the Farmers to Families Food Box, fresh foods,” the agency said. It added that “the most obvious” benefit would be “the removal of administrative middlemen from the distribution of food.” The Farmers to Families Food Box, a pandemic food program that ran from May 2020 to May 2021, relied on more than 200 contractors to deliver millions of boxes to needy families, according to a 2021 analysis from the U.S. Government Accountability Office. The study found that the 21 biggest contractors were collectively awarded $3 billion to deliver the boxes. MAHA, meanwhile, is part of a push by Kennedy to promote natural foods and alternative medicines. As head of HHS, he’s pressing the food industry to stop using synthetic food dyes and has pledged to remove processed foods from school lunches. The USDA has signaled its openness to the MAHA platform, with Secretary Brooke Rollins saying she plans to approve a plan from Arkansas to ban the use of food stamps for purchasing sodas and candy. Anti-hunger advocates have said such restrictions can be stigmatizing for low-income Americans. In the meantime, Matysik said he’s worried about the future of the CSFP program and the seniors who rely on it. “Our seniors in particular are already hurting,” he said. “We’re hearing about cuts to the SNAP program. We’re seeing about cuts to Medicaid and Medicare. (AP) — The North Carolina elections board ousted its widely respected executive director Wednesday in a partisan move that will put Republicans in control of election operations in the political swing state, which includes the certification of results. The removal of Karen Brinson Bell, who had held the job for nearly six years during a time when the board had Democratic majorities, came after Republicans took away the authority to appoint election board members from the Democratic governor late last year, overriding a veto while they still held a supermajority in the legislature. Republicans handed that power to the elected state auditor, a Republican. Meeting for the first time with its new GOP majority, the North Carolina State Board of Elections agreed in a party-line vote to replace Brinson Bell with Sam Hayes, the top lawyer for the Republican House speaker. The board declined to consider her request to speak at the end of the meeting, adjourning instead. “While I would have liked to have continued to serve the county board of elections and the voters of North Carolina in this capacity, the state board has made a different decision,” Brinson Bell said after the meeting to those remaining in the audience. Brinson Bell led the board during the voting difficulties of the early COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and through last year’s presidential balloting after a devastating hurricane hit the state. Democratic board member Siobhan O’Duffy Millen told her Republican colleagues before the 3-2 vote to hire Hayes that how they parted ways with Brinson Bell was “a shabby way to treat a nationally admired executive election director.” Nonetheless, her removal was not surprising, given that there’s precedent for a new director to get hired with a changing partisan majority, and Republican legislative leaders have clashed over the years with Brinson Bell. Still, the circumstances are extraordinary. Republicans have sought board changes for years The board’s partisan composition was altered just last week through the state law enacted by Republican lawmakers in December over the veto of then-Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat. It stripped the governor of his appointment powers not only to the state election board, but also to the chairs of county election boards. Republicans are also expected to install new GOP majorities on the local boards next month. The GOP has tried several times since 2016 to remove the governor’s authority to choose members of the election board, whose duties include carrying out campaign finance laws, certifying election results and setting rules on a host of voting administration details. New Democratic Gov. Josh Stein sued over the law, and some trial judges ruled that it had to be blocked. But the appointment switch took effect after a state Court of Appeals panel ruled the law could still be implemented starting May 1. The executive director is chosen for a two-year term set to begin May 15. Election leaders praise outgoing director Brinson Bell received high marks from colleagues for helping administer elections during the pandemic and when a photo identification requirement was carried out in the first general election in 2024. She also oversaw the effort to hold the presidential election in the state last year after Hurricane Helene laid waste to numerous counties when it struck in September. The storm and subsequent flooding knocked out power and damaged water treatment systems across western North Carolina. Nonetheless, election officials managed to open nearly all of the 80 voting sites initially planned for the hardest hit areas on the first day of early in-person voting, just weeks later. Some Republican officials complained about long lines at early-vote sites in some counties, and with mixed results lobbied to get more open. Brinson Bell was selected recently to serve as the incoming president of the National Association of State Election Directors — a position Brinson Bell said she can no longer hold after losing her job. David Becker, a former U.S. Justice Department lawyer who now leads the Center for Election Innovation & Research, said the GOP’s “highly partisan power grab” has “resulted in the removal of one of the most highly respected election officials in the country.” Justin Roebuck, the chief election official in Ottawa County, Michigan, said Brinson Bell’s “departure will be a significant loss — not only for North Carolina voters but for the entire election administration community that has benefited from her leadership.” Pandemic litigation built animosity State Republicans have been unhappy with Brinson Bell going back years. They focused on her role in a legal settlement in 2020. The settlement extended to nine days after the November election the time for mail ballots postmarked by Election Day to be received and counted. State law at the time had set the limit at three days. Brinson Bell defended her actions and those of the board, saying they helped more mail-in ballots get counted after worries about Postal Service delays during the pandemic. GOP leaders also have criticized the previous board for what they called errors in how election laws were carried out for the 2024 election. It led to litigation and formal protests in last November’s race for a state Supreme Court seat that dragged on for months. After last November’s election, Brinson Bell publicly asked that Senate leader Phil Berger -– the state’s most powerful Republican elected official -– to retract a comment suggesting that results were being manipulated during the canvassing ******* to lead to favorable results for Democrats. She said such words could lead to threats against local election workers. Berger declined to withdraw his comments. Republican chairman says he seeks trust in elections Francis De Luca, a Republican who chairs the new elections board, said his goal was that “we get things so we have fair elections, make voting easy and make sure we follow the law. And make sure there is trust in the election system.” Republican Donald Trump has won the state each of the three times he has run for president. Hayes, the incoming election director, has been general counsel to previous Speaker Tim Moore and current Speaker Destin Hall. His career has largely been spent working for state agencies, and he has been highly involved with election-related litigation filed against GOP lawmakers.
