  2. Turkish Tufts University student Rumeysa Ozturk to be released on bail Turkish Tufts University student Rumeysa Ozturk to be released on bail A federal judge has ordered the release of a Turkish student at Tufts University who is being held in Louisiana after US immigration officials arrested her in Massachusetts. Rumeysa Ozturk, 30, testified virtually at a court hearing on Friday, where US District Judge William Sessions said the student met all the conditions needed for release and lambasted the government’s case against her, according to BBC news partner CBS. “Her continued detention chills the speech of millions in this country who are not citizens,” the judge said. Ms Otzurk co-authored an opinion piece in her campus newspaper that was critical of Israel’s war. Her arrest follows the White House’s crackdown on what it has classified as antisemitism on US campuses. The US Department of Homeland Security had accused Ms Ozturk of “engag[ing] in activities in support of ******, a foreign terrorist organization that relishes the killing of Americans”. The government did not call any witnesses during the hearing. After the judge’s ruling, a DHS spokesperson responded: “Visas provided to foreign students to live and study in the United States are a privilege not a right. The Trump administration is committed to restoring the rule of law and common sense to our immigration system, and will continue to fight for the arrest, detention, and removal of aliens who have no right to be in this country.” Videos of Ms Ozturk’s arrest in March, showing masked plain-clothes officers handcuffing her and taking her into an unmarked car after a Ramadan celebration, sparked nation-wide protests. Earlier this week, the judge ordered that Ms Ozturk be transferred by 14 May to immigration authorities in Vermont, where she was last held before she was taken to Louisiana. The judge said Friday that she should be released immediately without travel restrictions, so she can go to Vermont or Massachusetts, where Tufts is located, as needed. He heard from a number of witnesses in the case, including Ms Ozturk, her doctor and a Tufts University professor. During her testimony, Ms Ozturk told the court about her Fulbright scholarship and her PhD work. She said her asthma condition had worsened during detainment, and at one point, had to take a short break after suffering an asthma attack on camera. After hearing from witnesses for the defence, Judge Sessions said Ms Ozturk had raised “very substantial” claims that her First Amendment and due process rights were violated. He said the only evidence the administration had against Ms Ozturk was her op-ed. “That literally is the case,” he said, according to court reporters. “There is no evidence that she has engaged in violence or advocated violence.” In a statement, the American Civil Liberties Union, which is representing Ms Ozturk, said they were “delighted” by her release. “Rümeysa can now return to her beloved Tufts community, resume her studies, and begin teaching again,” said Noor Zafar, a senior staff attorney with the ACLU. “Today’s ruling underscores a vital First Amendment principle: No one should be imprisoned by the government for expressing their beliefs.” Judge Sessions told the court that the government must notify him when Ms Ozturk is freed and said he would deny any motions to block her release. The Trump administration has detained several international students – some legal residents – who have organised in support of Palestine. Last week, a judge ordered the government to release Columbia University student Mohsen Mahdawi after immigration officials detained him during a naturalization interview. The 34-year-old permanent resident was raised in a refugee camp in the West Bank and had been held at a facility in Vermont. One of the highest profile cases thus far involves Columbia graduate Mahmoud Khalil, a prominent pro-************ activist, who remains in a Louisiana detention facility without charges. 3. Brilliant Sci-Fi Manga Planetes Is Getting New Deluxe Edition Omnibuses Brilliant Sci-Fi Manga Planetes Is Getting New Deluxe Edition Omnibuses Some of the best manga series ever printed will make you ponder long and hard about a wide range of topics, and Planetes is a heck of a great–and thought-provoking–read. A must-have for fans of the sci-fi genre, the manga will soon be reissued by Dark Horse in Deluxe Edition hardcover format. Planetes Deluxe Edition Book 1 releases July 29, and Book 2 of the critically acclaimed manga is slated to follow on December 2. Paperback omnibus editions of Planetes were published back in 2015-16, and while you can still get Volume 1 for $25, Volume 2 hasn’t been available to purchase at Amazon for a while. $50 | Releases July 29 Like other Deluxe Edition manga published by Dark Horse, these 7 x 10-inch hardcover editions of Planetes have beautiful, understated cover art featuring various patterns inspired by the International Space Station. To provide a tactile feel, Dark Horse physically imprinted some of the patterns and words on the front and back covers. Book 1’s 528 pages have copper gilding on their edges. Perhaps most notably, fans will be able to admire 44 pages of full-color artwork printed on glossy art stock. Planetes was the debut work of Makoto Yukimura, the mangaka who is currently best known for Vinland Saga. The series began publication in 1999 and concluded in 2004 with 26 total chapters across four volumes. Deluxe Edition: Book 1 contains the first half of the story arc. In case you’ve never read it, Planetes takes place in the late 21st century and follows working-class astronauts tasked with clearing debris and other man-made hazards from orbit. Plans are also underway for the first-ever crewed voyage to Jupiter, as the planet is abundant with a resource that can be used to further humanity’s goals to explore the rest of the solar system. This puts several characters on a collision course, as the race to reach Jupiter is fraught with peril, human drama, and other elements that threaten to derail the mission. What makes Planetes so interesting is that Yukimura did an incredible amount of research to make the series feel plausible. It’s full of real-world technology and science, all set against the backdrop of intriguing developments with the cast and the world around them. If you enjoy hard science movies like Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, then you’ll want to check out this series. $50 | Releases December 2 From a design perspective, Planetes Deluxe Edition: Book 2 is quite similar to Book 1. The main difference is that the porthole on the front cover features a different planet. Outside of the that, you can expect to find the same premium updates when Book 2 releases on December 2: Imprinted front and back cover patterns, metallic copper gilded edges, and 44 glossy pages of full-color art. Book 2 is 536 pages–slightly longer than the 2016 paperback omnibus–and contains the back half of Planetes’ memorable sci-fi tale. As mentioned, the paperback edition is no longer in print, so it’s awesome to see the full Planetes story will available once again in physical omnibus format. $53.30 (was $70) The first three volumes of Planetes was also adapted into a 26-episode anime series in the early 2000s. Since the manga was still running at the time, the adaptation leaned more into the political themes of the series while introducing new characters to the story. It’s still a great series to check out, full of animation that explores humanity’s desire to explore the infinite frontier, and you can pick it up on Blu-ray for $53.50 (was $70) through Amazon. Get discounts on Books 1-7 As mentioned above, Yukimura would follow up Planetes with Vinland Saga, a series that he has been working on for 20 years now. While Planetes looked at humanity’s relationship with space, Vinland Saga is an epic storyline that follows the protagonist Thorfinn during the Viking Age. While it starts off as a revenge-thriller about a young boy obsessed with killing his father’s *********, Vinland Saga evolves into a grander tale of redemption, forgiveness, and new beginnings. Vinland Saga’s Deluxe Edition project is ongoing, but Dark Horse has been moving quickly. Since the first Deluxe Edition’s release in early 2024, Dark Horse has published six subsequent hardcover editions, and Book 8 is slated to arrive on August 5. These hardcover editions of the manga collect three volumes of the series on high-quality paper, plus they’re oversized editions that allow you to soak up the art in all of its incredible detail. You’ll also find lots of bonus materials here, like commentary and research notes from Yukimura that reveal his meticulous attention to detail, exclusive art, interviews, and exclusive bonus illustrations. Vinland Saga Deluxe Edition: Book 1 — $47 ($55) Vinland Saga Deluxe Edition: Book 2 — $32 ($55) Vinland Saga Deluxe Edition: Book 3 — $43 ($55) Vinland Saga Deluxe Edition: Book 4 — $32 ($55) Vinland Saga Deluxe Edition: Book 5 — $26 ($55) Vinland Saga Deluxe Edition: Book 6 — $32 ($55) Vinland Saga Deluxe Edition: Book 7 — $39 ($55) Vinland Saga Deluxe Edition: Book 8 — $55 | Releases August 5 For more high-end physical edition manga from Dark Horse, Viz Media, and other major publishers, check out our roundup of the best Deluxe Edition manga you can buy and preorder now. 4. Diver dies working on tycoon’s sunken superyacht Diver dies working on tycoon’s sunken superyacht Thomas Mackintosh BBC News Getty Images The recovery process is expected to take several weeks A diver has died during preliminary operations to recover British tech tycoon Mike ******’s superyacht from the waters off the coast of northern Sicily, local police said. The accident happened on Friday while the diver was underwater in Porticello, police said, adding the precise cause of death was still unknown. According to local Italian media, the diver was a 39-year-old Dutch national who worked for a specialist salvage company. It comes as salvage ships arrived earlier this month to waters off the small port of Porticello, near Palermo, where the Bayesian vessel sank during freak weather last August. Seven of the 22 people onboard the Bayesian last summer were killed, including Mr ******, 59, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah. Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, 70, and his wife, Judy, 71, US lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda Morvillo and the yacht’s chef Recaldo Thomas, who was originally from Antigua, also died in the sinking on 19 August. Fifteen people managed to escape on a lifeboat including a one-year-old and Mr ******’s wife Angela Bacares. The cause of the sinking is still under investigation with naval experts saying a yacht of Bayesian’s calibre should have been able to withstand the storm and certainly should not have sunk as rapidly as it did. PA Media Hannah and Mike ****** were among seven people who died when the Bayesian sank The salvage operation is being overseen by British marine consultancy TMC Marine and led by Dutch-based companies Hebo, a maritime services company from Rotterdam, and SMIT Salvage, with support from Italian specialists. About 70 specialist personnel have been deployed to Sicily from across Europe to work on the recovery operation. On Thursday, the team said on-site preparations were on schedule and “significant progress” had been made over the past five days. Analysis of the yacht and the surrounding seabed confirmed there had been no change to its condition since the last inspection, meaning plans to raise the vessel can now go ahead. Work to move the Bayesian into an upright position and lift it to the surface was scheduled to begin later this month – subject to suitable weather and sea conditions. Before the vessel is transported to port, sea water will be pumped out of it. PERINI NAVI PRESS OFFICE The Bayesian left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August before it sank on 19 August Before the Bayesian is raised it will be held in position by steel slings, as salvage workers detach the vessel’s extensive rigging and 72m (236ft) mast, thought to be one of the tallest in the world. These will then be stored on the seabed and recovered after the team has recovered the ship’s hull, which investigators say is a primary source of evidence. There has not been any pollution from the yacht reported, with conditions being monitored and efforts made to secure its tank vents and openings. Inquest proceedings in the *** are looking at the deaths of Mr ****** and his daughter, as Mr and Mrs Bloomer, who were all British nationals. Mr ****** and his daughter were said to have lived in the vicinity of London, and the Bloomers lived in Sevenoaks in Kent. The tycoon founded software giant Autonomy in 1996 and was cleared in June last year of carrying out a massive fraud over the ***** of the firm to Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011. 7. Google inks deal to develop 1.8 GW of advanced nuclear power Google inks deal to develop 1.8 GW of advanced nuclear power Google and nuclear site developer Elementl Power announced this week that they will work together on three sites for advanced nuclear reactors. The tech company has been rushing to lock up energy sources as its AI ambitions drive growing power demands at its data centers. This year alone, Google plans to spend $75 billion building data center capacity. With the new deal, Google is promising to add at least 600 megawatts of generating capacity at each of the three sites. Elementl said the reactors will be connected to the grid “with the option for commercial off-take,” meaning that Google can buy power directly. Elementl has been operating stealthily until this announcement. The team has experience in the nuclear industry, though it hasn’t developed any power plants yet. The company was started by Breakwater North and is backed by Energy Impact Partners. Elementl is taking a “technology agnostic” approach, meaning that it hasn’t decided on which small modular reactor (SMR) company it will work with to develop the projects. There are a number of possibilities, though Kairos Power is a likely frontrunner given its existing deal with Google. Kairos says its demo plant will generate 50 megawatts of electricity, with an eventual commercial plant producing 150 megawatts split between two reactors. There’s no universally accepted definition, but SMRs tend to top out at 300 megawatts or so. By comparison, the most recently completed nuclear power plant in the U.S., Vogtle Unit 4 in Georgia, generates over 1.1 gigawatts of electricity, nearly four times the size of a large SMR. Silicon Valley has been smitten by SMRs. Startups have been rushing into the space, promising to slash reactor costs through mass manufacturing enabled by SMRs’ smaller size. That, coupled with the promise of 24/7 power that could be sited close to data centers, has pushed them to sign a number of deals with SMR startups, including Oklo, X-Energy, and the aforementioned Kairos. Yet no SMR has been built outside of China. One startup, NuScale, has gotten close to building one, but it suffered a setback in 2023 when its utility partner canceled its contract after the estimated cost of the project more than doubled — even as the plans were downsized in an effort to contain costs. 9. Trump administration eyes suspending habeas corpus Trump administration eyes suspending habeas corpus White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller speaks to the media outside the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., May 9, 2025. Kent Nishimura | Reuters White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller said Friday that the Trump administration is “actively looking at” suspending the writ of habeas corpus, which is the right to challenge the legality of a person’s detention by the government. Miller’s comment came in response to a White House reporter who asked about President Donald Trump entertaining the idea of suspending the writ of habeas corpus to deal with the problem of ******** immigration into the United States. Asked when that might happen, Miller responded: “The Constitution is clear, and that, of course, is the supreme law of the land, that the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus can be suspended in time of invasion.” “So, I would say that’s an option we’re actively looking at,” he said. Miller said that Trump’s decision on whether to suspend the writ of habeas corpus “depends on whether the courts do the right thing or not.” Miller implied that “the right thing” is for judges to stop blocking the administration’s deportation of undocumented immigrants in cases where those people are exercising habeas writs. The idea of habeas corpus was codified in the Magna Carta, signed by King John of England, in the early 13th Century. “No man shall be arrested or imprisoned…except by the lawful judgment of his peers and by the law of the land,” the provision said. Miller’s use of the word “invasion” reflects the Trump administration’s argument that the U.S. faces an “invasion” of undocumented migrants. Read more CNBC politics coverage The administration likewise has claimed that there is a national emergency from the influx of the deadly opioid fentanyl into the U.S. that justifies the imposition of high tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico without prior authorization by Congress. A number of pending civil cases challenging the Trump administration’s deportation of undocumented immigrants in the United States are based on habeas claims. In one such case, a Georgetown University scholar, Dr. Badar Khan, is challenging the constitutionality of his arrest and detention. The Trump administration has chafed at orders by judges blocking efforts to summarily deport immigrants, including alleged gang members. Miller said that Congress had stripped federal courts of jurisdiction over immigration cases with the Immigration and Nationality Act. “The courts aren’t just at war with the executive branch, the courts are at war, these radical rogue judges, with the legislative branch as well,” Miller said. “So all of that will inform the choices the president ultimately makes.” This is breaking news. 11. Pope Election 2025 Is Not News to True Assassin’s Creed Fans Pope Election 2025 Is Not News to True Assassin’s Creed Fans While the world watches history unfold in ******** City, welcoming the freshly elected Pope Leo XIV, some of us, specifically the Assassin’s Creed diehards, are suppressing an all-too-familiar muscle memory: the urge to square up with the Pope. Respectfully, of course. As people learning papal trivia about Robert Francis Prevost, gamers everywhere are instinctively scanning the Sistine Chapel for hidden entrances and bracing themselves for a surprise boss fight. Once you’ve knuckled up against a Pope in the virtual ********, the conclave just hits different. The world welcomes a new Pope, but gamers are still mentally in 1499 Following Pope Francis’s passing on April 21, the Catholic Church embarked on its honored tradition of electing a new Pope. Recently, it was announced from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica that at the age of 69, Robert Francis Prevost will ascend as the 267th occupant of the throne of St. Peter, adopting the papal name Leo XIV. It’s a historic moment around the globe, but for Assassin’s Creed 2 (set in 1499 in Rome) veterans, their minds can’t help but wander back to the late 15th century, when they (as Ezio Auditore) faced off against Pope Rodrigo Borgia in an absolutely unhinged fistfight. Not in some alley, mind you, but right inside the Sistine Chapel. With ancient alien artifacts in hand, the two men simply threw hands over the fate of humanity. It was, as it seems, chaotic, audacious, and completely unforgettable. Sure, today’s conclave is solemn and reverent, but back then (in video game land), it was more like, as Ezio actually says before challenging the Pope to a fist fight: “No more tricks. No more ancient artifacts. No more weapons. Let us see what you are made of, old man.“ Comment byu/MASTER_L1NK from discussion inassassinscreed Comment byu/MASTER_L1NK from discussion inassassinscreed Players are having a collective chuckle as they remember just how wild video game worlds can be. After all, where else but in gaming do you go from Renaissance art appreciation to laying smackdown with a Pontiff? It’s the kind of surreal thing that only happens in Assassin’s Creed. When Assassin’s Creed made the ******** a boss arena New Pope? Cool. We’ve been there, dodged that staff swing. | Image Credit: Ubisoft For those who haven’t parkoured across rooftops in a while, Assassin’s Creed 2 didn’t throw players into a papal brawl just for shock value. The series has always thrived on blending real history with secret societies, ancient artifacts, and world-shifting conspiracies. In the game, Rodrigo Borgia, the historical Pope Alexander VI, is reimagined as the Grand Master of the Templars, determined to use the Apple and Staff of Eden to unlock a hidden vault beneath the ******** and claim ultimate power. Naturally, this sets him up as the ultimate antagonist to Ezio’s Assassin ideals. By the time Ezio confronts Borgia in the Sistine Chapel, it’s the culmination of years of betrayal, revenge, and philosophical warfare between Assassins and Templars. So, the one-on-one fistfight in one of the most iconic holy sites on earth wasn’t just dramatic, it was poetic. And true to Ezio’s growth as a character, he ultimately chooses mercy over vengeance, sparing Borgia’s life despite their history. It was peak Assassin’s Creed: historical settings meticulously recreated, real-world figures reimagined, and gameplay moments so over-the-top you can’t help but grin. So yes, while people are celebrating the election of Pope Leo XIV, a subset of gamers are quietly reminiscing about the time they had to punch a Pope to save the world. No offense meant, Your Holiness, it’s just that once you’ve squared up in the Sistine Chapel, the news hits slightly differently. Mercenary and coup plotter dies Mercenary and coup plotter dies Former British Army officer and mercenary Simon Mann, who was part of a coup attempt in Equatorial Guinea in 2004, has died of a heart attack while exercising, friends confirmed. The 72-year-old made millions of pounds from protecting businesses in conflict zones before he took part in the failed attempt to overthrow the west African nation’s ruler. Mr Mann was sentenced to 34 years in prison on arms charges and later admitted he had been the “manager, not the architect” of the scheme. In 2009, the ex-SAS commando was pardoned, released and given 48 hours to leave the country. Mr Mann attended private boys’ school Eton before studying at Sandhurst Royal Military Academy and then joining the Scots Guards. He became a member of the SAS – the army’s special forces unit – and rose through the ranks to become a commander. In 2011, he said the attempted coup in Equatorial Guinea – which saw him arrested with fellow mercenaries after trying to load weapons onto a plane in Zimbabwe – was foiled by the CIA. After serving three years of his 34-year sentence in Zimbabwe, he was moved to ****** Beach Prison in Equatorial Guinea. Speaking in 2011 about that move, he said “friends, family, and enemies” had told him “if that happens, you have had it, you’re a dead man”. 13. Mexico says it’s suing Google for labeling Gulf of Mexico as Trump-preferred Gulf of America Mexico says it’s suing Google for labeling Gulf of Mexico as Trump-preferred Gulf of America Mexico is suing tech giant Google for labeling the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America for U.S. users, after President Trump ordered the U.S. government to change the body of water’s name, ******** President Claudia Sheinbaum said Friday. Sheinbaum announced the lawsuit in her daily press briefing, but did not provide details on the suit. Mexico’s foreign relations ministry had previously sent letters to Google asking it not to label ******** territorial waters as the Gulf of America. Mexico argues the new label should only apply to the part of the Gulf over the United States’ continental shelf. In February, Sheinbaum shared a letter from Cris Turner, Google’s vice president of government affairs and public policy, stating that Google will not change the policy it outlined after Mr. Trump declared the body of water the Gulf of America. As it stands, the gulf appears in Google Maps as Gulf of America within the United States, as Gulf of Mexico within Mexico and Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) elsewhere. Turner in his letter said the company was using Gulf of America to follow “longstanding maps policies impartially and consistently across all regions.” Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CBS News. Mr. Trump signed an executive order to change the body of water’s name to the Gulf of America — and change the Alaskan mountain Denali’s name back to Mount McKinley — shortly after taking office. The Interior Department later formally renamed the gulf. The executive order only carries authority within the U.S., and Mexico and other countries do not need to recognize the name change. The U.S. and Mexico both have coastlines along the Gulf, and a State Department report from the 1970s said the maritime boundary between the two countries begins at the center of the mouth of the Rio Grande and runs in a fixed line. Still, Mr. Trump and his allies have pushed for wider adoption of the Gulf of America name. The House on Thursday passed a bill that sought to codify the name change and direct federal agencies to update their maps accordingly, with almost all Republicans voting in favor. Meanwhile, the Trump administration restricted Associated Press reporters’ access to some White House spaces after the outlet chose not to follow the name change, though a federal judge ordered the government to restore access. 14. Finding Peace During Unexpected Pregnancy and Joy in Motherhood Finding Peace During Unexpected Pregnancy and Joy in Motherhood Like many young couples who become unexpectedly pregnant, my boyfriend and I were consumed with questions and wondered where we’d find support when my pregnancy test came back positive. As new transplants to Maryland, where we lived far from our families for the very first time, we felt we had nowhere to turn. We sought out the closest women’s health clinic we could find, which happened to be our local pregnancy resource center just down the street. Little did I realize when I walked through their doors in search of an answer to one question – “am I really pregnant?” – that I would discover a resource that would profoundly change my life and empower me to give birth to my sweet son, Milo, just nine months later. Among a wealth of information the center shared with me was a brochure for a free mentorship program to help women facing unexpected pregnancies. Their brochure instantly resonated with me because, as a first-time mom, I found the concept of being totally responsible for a new living person quite daunting. Even though we had decided to jump feet-first into the adventure of parenting, I knew we’d need all the help we could get and quickly reached out to them. I was put in touch with one of their mentors, Kaitlyn, and told I could reach out around the clock with any questions about the joys and trials of motherhood. I appreciated that Kaitlyn was about my age and had a few young children herself, allowing her to empathize with my fears and better provide me with the peace and knowledge I sought. I could video call or text Kaitlyn at every step and stage of Milo’s development, and she soon became one of my close friends. When I thought I was having contractions, Kaitlyn was just a phone call away to walk me through what I was experiencing. Kaitlyn even made the trip from her home in Wisconsin to Maryland just to be with me for Milo’s baby shower. Kaitlyn gave me the confidence I needed to care for Milo, before and after birth. Any question I had, I had Kaitlyn in my back pocket – just a quick text or phone call away – with an answer. Kaitlyn even helped me pick out a pump and build out my baby registry to ensure that I had all the supplies I needed when Milo arrived. The reassurance of knowing we had someone in our corner helped us go from ‘how are we going to do this?’ to ‘we can do this.’ Now that Milo is six months old, I often have questions about his developing behavior, questions Kaitlyn is still there to answer. When I worry that he cries louder or more often, she reminds me that his teeth may come in soon. When I flew on a plane with Milo for the first time, Kaitlyn told me exactly what to expect. It’s like having a best friend and cheerleader on speed-dial. To expecting mothers across the country – even as far as Alaska and Hawaii – you don’t have to do this alone. Look for pregnancy centers and mentorship programs in your neighborhood or virtually. Thanks to the support I received from Kaitlyn and the Leap for Joy mentorship program, I not only discovered the confidence to give Milo the love and care he deserves, I also found a new friend. With support, motherhood is far less daunting and far more rewarding than anything I’ve ever experienced. Seeing my son grow, laugh and discover the world around him has become my greatest joy, and I wouldn’t have started on this journey half as knowledgeable without the help of this new friend. It really does take a village. ***Faith Evans is 24, mom to Milo and lives in Maryland. The one day when grief for lost mums hits extra hard The one day when grief for lost mums hits extra hard On Mother’s Day, many daughters will be taking their mums out for brunch, showering them with gifts or presenting them with hand-made cards. But many more will be grieving lost loved-ones on a date that has become heavily commercialised, with an overwhelming focus on mums who are still alive. There are 3.9 million daughters across Australia whose mothers have died – and more than one million of that cohort are under the age of 44. She was just 44 and had spent her life dedicated to animal ******** as a vet nurse and dog trainer. On Sunday, Ms Truscott will commemorate her mum by doing the things she loved to do. “A big part of mum’s life was her animals and since her passing I have taken over them all, so I try to spend the day giving the love I would give to my mum to them,” she told AAP. The rescued animals include three dogs, two cats, chickens, a goat, a sheep and a miniature Shetland pony. Looking for support, she found the Motherless Daughters Australia website, which helped normalise what she was experiencing. “It was the first time I’d experienced an environment where people talked about that stuff, I had a sense that I wasn’t alone and that it was OK to reach out for support,” Ms Truscott said. “A very common saying is the fact that grief is just love that doesn’t have anywhere to go and that’s what happens when you lose someone.” The organisation was founded by two women – Danielle Snelling and Eloise Baker – who wanted to connect and support other women, girls and families experiencing the lifelong impact of their mothers’ deaths. When Ms Snelling lost her mum Rosa to a rare form of gynaecological ******* in 2012, she couldn’t find many resources to help with her grief. “Grief is not something you fix, it forever changes and alters you – it becomes part of you and your identity,” she said. “Motherless Daughters gives people the space to acknowledge that grief is a part of who they are, that it can co-exist with joy and that it’s OK to also feel sad that your mum isn’t there for milestones in your life.” The organisation has more than 50,000 members who gather for events, fundraisers and connect online. Each May, the organisation marks mother-loss awareness week to normalise the conversation around grief and the benefits of talking about it. Michelle Cox lost her mum Jan when she was in her early 20s and about three decades later serves as the organisation’s chair. “We are terrible with grief in this country and not good at supporting those who are grieving,” she said. “Grief is different for everybody and every person navigates it a different way, and you don’t have to be apologetic for the way you grieve.” Source link #day #grief #lost #mums #hits #extra #hard Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  16. Cardinal Prevost put his head in his hands as papacy loomed Cardinal Prevost put his head in his hands as papacy loomed By Joshua McElwee ******** CITY (Reuters) – As U.S. Cardinal Robert Prevost realized during the secret conclave that he might be elected the next Catholic pope, he put his head in his hands at the daunting prospect of leading the 1.4-billion-member Church, a cardinal said on Friday. New Jersey Cardinal Joseph Tobin, one of the other 132 clerics locked inside the Sistine Chapel with Prevost for the conclave, said he looked at the future pope during one of the last ballots. “I took a look at Bob, because his name had been floating around and he had his head in his hands,” Tobin said, using Prevost’s nickname. “I was praying for him, because I couldn’t imagine what happens to a human being when you’re facing something like that.” “And then when he accepted, it was like he was made for it,” said Tobin. “Whatever anguish was resolved. I think … God had made something clear and he agreed with it.” Tobin was speaking at a press conference with six other cardinals, in their first public comments since the election of Prevost as Pope Leo XIV on Thursday evening. Leo, a largely unknown figure on the world stage, is a former U.S. missionary in Peru who was a senior ******** official for the past two years. The cardinals offered small insights into the secretive conclave process and even joked about the food. New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan called it a “good, good, good, good impetus to get this over with.” They also speculated about how Leo, the first U.S. pope, might engage with President Donald Trump. Dolan said he did not think Prevost’s nationality “had much weight” in the cardinals’ decision. “It should not startle us that we should look to Pope Leo as a bridge builder,” said Dolan. “Will he want to build bridges with Donald Trump? I suppose. But he will want to build bridges with the leader of every nation.” The late Pope Francis was a sharp critic of Trump, saying earlier this year that the president’s plan to deport millions of migrants in the U.S. was a “disgrace”. Asked whether Leo will act like Francis and openly criticize the Trump administration’s policies, the cardinals demurred. “We were looking for someone following the pathway of Francis, but we were not looking for a photocopy,” said Washington, D.C. Cardinal Robert McElroy. Cardinal Wilton Gregory, McElroy’s now retired predecessor in Washington, said it was important to give Leo “space to grow into the office.” Gregory added a joke: “He’s never been pope before.” (Reporting by Joshua McElwee; Editing by Keith Weir) Source link #Cardinal #Prevost #put #hands #papacy #loomed Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

One Game Convinced Hidetaka Miyazaki To Tank a Massive Income Drop and Join FromSoftware One Game Convinced Hidetaka Miyazaki To Tank a Massive Income Drop and Join FromSoftware Hidetaka Miyazaki is a name that echoes through the gaming world, thanks to his major contributions to shaping the Souls genre and lifting FromSoftware off the ground. But before shaping the industry with masterpieces like Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring, Hidetaka Miyazaki was working a comfortable, stable job at Oracle in the United States. Despite doing well in the US, Miyazaki likely longed for more, which is why all it took was a single video game to take a massive pay cut and move to work as a programmer at FromSoftware. If the gaming industry were to be related to Marvel, this switching of jobs would possibly be a canon event. Hidetaka Miyazaki and his pay cut that revolutionised the gaming world Hidetaka Miyazaki took a massive pay cut to work at FromSoftware | Nintendo Before joining FromSoftware back in 2004, Hidetaka Miyazaki was living the corporate reality everyone dreams of. However, despite doing well, the now-renowned director felt like doing more with his life at the time, an emotion he felt after playing a certain game. In an interview with The Guardian, Miyazaki revealed how his former college mates recommended him to play Ico, an iconic fairytale title, which made him want to make a game himself: That game awoke me to the possibilities of the medium, I wanted to make one myself. To follow this dream, the director then applied to FromSoftware, a relatively unknown Japanese game company at the time, as a programmer for the lesser-known mech series called Armored Core. Released in 2005, Armored Core: Last Raven became the first game that roll with credits to Hidetaka Miyazaki at the end. How Hidetaka Miyazaki made a name for himself ******’s Souls was Hidetaka Miyazaki’s first Souls game | FromSoftware The job at FromSoftware came with a massive pay cut, but it allowed Hidetaka Miyazaki to chase a passion he had been longing for a while. After working on the Armored Core series, the director gradually made his way up the ladder, before he was ultimately made the president of the studio in 2014. Back when ******’s Souls was having a hard time executing, Miyazaki jumped on the opportunity to work on it as he found the idea of a fantasy action role-playing game very exciting. He then helped the studio build the game’s prototypes, ultimately taking over the direction and laying a foundation stone for the Souls genre. Today, Hidetaka Miyazaki is hailed as one of gaming’s most influential creators. His works have redefined difficulty and the idea of dying with purpose in video games. But it all traces back to Ico, the game that started it all by inspiring him to achieve more with his life. How top tax rates compare, as Trump eyes hike for wealthy How top tax rates compare, as Trump eyes hike for wealthy U.S. President Donald Trump points as he attends the annual Friends of Ireland luncheon hosted by U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., U.S., March 12, 2025. Evelyn Hockstein | Reuters As Republicans wrestle with funding their massive spending and tax package, President Donald Trump is eyeing a possible tax hike for the highest earners. The idea, which lacks Republican support, could return the top federal income tax rate to 2017 levels for some of the wealthiest Americans. In a phone call Thursday, NBC reported, Trump pressed House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., to raise the top income tax rate on the wealthiest Americans and close the so-called carried interest loophole. The proposal would revert the 37% rate to 39.6% for individuals making $2.5 million or more per year, to help preserve Medicaid and tax cuts for everyday Americans. More from Personal Finance: How many consumers are preparing for an economic hit Why Americans think real estate, gold are the best long-term investments Trump tariffs sparked ‘uptick’ in I bond interest, advisor says. What to know Trump on Friday expressed openness to the tax hike on the wealthiest Americans in a Truth Social post, noting he would “graciously accept” the tax increase to “help the lower and middle income workers.” “Republicans should probably not do it, but I’m OK if they do!!!” he wrote. Enacted by Trump, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, or TCJA, of 2017 created sweeping tax breaks for individuals and businesses. Most will sunset after 2025 without an extension from Congress. The TCJA temporarily dropped the highest income tax rate from 39.6% to 37%. For 2025, the 37% rate kicks in for single filers once taxable income exceeds $626,350. How Trump’s idea compares to historic rates If signed into law, a top 39.6% income tax rate would return wealthy taxpayers to pre-TCJA levels from 2013 to 2017. Before that, the top rate was 35% during most of the early 2000s, according to data collected by the Tax Policy Center. The highest top rate was 94% from 1944-1945. However, this data doesn’t reflect how much income was subject to top rates or the value of standard and itemized deductions during these periods, the organization noted. Trump’s tax package faces a ‘math issue’ With control of Congress, Republicans can pass legislation through a process known as “reconciliation,” which can sidestep the Senate filibuster with a simple majority. However, there’s still disagreement about what should be included in the multi-trillion-dollar bill and how to finance it. Lawmakers face “a pretty simple math issue,” with many proposals not covering the cost, Yale Budget Lab president and law professor Natasha Sarin told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Friday. “We’re not getting anywhere close to the type of revenue increases we need,” she said. While not as prominent a role as it once was, there’s a curious elasticity to the adventure genre’s definition that occasionally leads to breakout successes. Point ‘n clicks have less pull today, but previous winners like 2023’s DREDGE and 2022’s Stray incorporate little nuances that’ve garnered extra interest outside of this modest adventure game enthusiast clique. The genre’s inherent flexibility also tends to result in more eclectic options – be it in mechanics, aesthetics, and/or tone. If 2024’s Best Shooter list had a theme towards consistency, 2024’s Best Adventure Game finalists are the inverse. Moreso than variety in protagonists, gameplay, and more, our top four also make site history in representing four different countries: USA, China, Poland, and Japan. Palantir may grow to a trillion dollar market value, investor says Palantir may grow to a trillion dollar market value, investor says Palantir is one stock to hold for the long term despite the stock market’s recent volatility, as the artificial intelligence software company might eventually land a $1 trillion market value, according to Will McGough, Prime Capital Financial director of investments. The investor said Palantir remains a buy even though the stock has rallied 55% this year. The latest move has lifted the company’s valuation to $281 billion, surpassing Salesforce, which is 10 times ******* in terms of revenue. Palantir was one of three stocks McGough called out as buys during CNBC’s ” Power Lunch .” Palantir Shares of Palantir have built on last year’s 340% advance as the data analytics and AI software firm recently joined the top 10 largest U.S. technology companies by market capitalization. McGough said even though he’s not a big fan of the stock’s technical setup on the basis of price charts after this year’s huge runup, the stock has a plenty more room to go in the long run. “I think you own for the ride to a trillion dollar market cap knowing it’s going to be extremely volatile,” McGough said. Palantir has price-to-earnings and other multiples that are far higher than its large-cap tech peers. Palantir currently trades for 520 times trailing earnings, almost 200 times forward earnings and 90 times revenue. Lyft On Lyft, which just reported earnings this week, McGough suggested investors hold it if they already own it. McGough said the wildcard about Lyft is that they could be a potential acquisition target. Lyft has been a big outperformer this year, up about 28%. The stock got a boost this week after the ride-sharing company boosted its share buyback authorization to $750 million as part of its first quarter earnings report. LYFT YTD mountain Lyft in 2025. 23. 115 Children Rescued from Trafficking, 200+ Sex Predators Captured Across US 115 Children Rescued from Trafficking, 200+ Sex Predators Captured Across US A nationwide sting has rescued 115 children from sex trafficking, leading to the arrest of more than 200 alleged child sex predators. The DOJ operation was carried out in coordination with local law enforcement in an effort to identify, track, and arrest child sex predators. The suspects who were arrested reportedly include an ******** immigrant from Mexico, a Minnesota state trooper, and a D.C. police officer. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel made the announcement this week. “The Department of Justice will never stop fighting to protect victims – especially child victims – and we will not rest until we hunt down, arrest, and prosecute every child predator who preys on the most vulnerable among us,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “I am grateful to the FBI and their state and local partners for their incredible work in Operation Restore Justice and have directed my prosecutors not to negotiate.” The operation unfolded over the course of five days, from April 28 through May 2, and “undoubtedly saved lives and protected vulnerable kids from further horrific crimes,” Patel posted on social media. “Every child deserves to grow up free from fear and exploitation, and the FBI will continue to be relentless in our pursuit of those who exploit the most vulnerable among us,” said Patel. The FBI urges the public to report suspected exploitation of any child through their tiplines at 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324), tips.fbi.gov, or by calling your local FBI field office. U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley for the District of Massachusetts also weighed in on the operation, saying, “Protecting children from exploitation is among the most sacred responsibilities we have in law enforcement. Each case serves as a difficult reminder that child predators are embedded in our communities. Some take on roles that increase their direct contact with children, while others prey on children from behind a keyboard. But make no mistake, we will identify, arrest, and hold every one of them accountable, no matter how long it takes or how far we have to go.” ***Please sign up for CBN Newsletters and download the CBN News app to ensure you keep receiving the latest news from a distinctly Christian perspective.*** Source link #Children #Rescued #Trafficking #Sex #Predators #Captured Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  25. NATO calls for 3.5% of GDP on defence budgets: Dutch PM NATO calls for 3.5% of GDP on defence budgets: Dutch PM Dutch Prime Minister ***** Schoof says the NATO’s chief wants the 32 member countries to agree to start spending at least 3.5 per cent of gross domestic product on their defence budgets at a summit in the Netherlands next month. In 2023, as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine entered its second year, NATO leaders agreed that all allies should spend at least two per cent of GDP. They are expected to set a new goal at a meeting in The Hague on June 25. President Donald Trump insists that US allies should commit to spending at least five per cent, but that would require investment at an unprecedented scale. Still, Trump has cast doubt over whether the United States would defend allies that spend too little. Schoof told reporters that NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has written to the member nations to tell them that “he expects the NATO summit to aim for 3.5 per cent hard military spending by 2032”. Rutte also wrote that he expects a commitment to “1.5 per cent related spending such as infrastructure, cybersecurity and things like that. Also achievable by 2032,” Schoof said. While the two figures do add up to five per cent, factoring in infrastructure and cybersecurity would change the basis on which NATO calculates defence spending. The seven-year time frame is also short by the alliance’s usual standards. Asked at NATO’s Brussels headquarters about his demand, Rutte said: “I’m not going to confirm the figures”. He said that “there are many rumors floating around” as NATO envoys discuss the new spending goal. NATO foreign ministers are likely to debate the numbers again at a meeting in Antalya, Turkey next Wednesday and Thursday. Rutte reaffirmed his public position that: “if we stick at the two per cent, we cannot defend ourselves. So we have to really increase defense spending”. Standing alongside Rutte, Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that for Germany currently, each one per cent of GDP represents around 45 billion euros ($A80 billion). Germany was estimated to have spent 2.1 per cent on its military budget last year, according to NATO figures. But Merz said that NATO allies “also need to discuss infrastructure as well,” including civilian infrastructure – roads, bridges, air and seaports – so that armies can move more quickly around Europe, and not just pure military spending. It remains difficult to see how many allies might reach even 3.5 per cent. NATO’s most recent estimates show that 22 allies would reach the two per cent goal last year, compared to a previous forecast of 23. Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Italy, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain would not, although Spain does expect to reach the two per cent goal in 2025, a year too late. Even the United States was estimated to have spent 3.19 per cent of GDP in 2024, down from 3.68 per cent a decade ago when all members vowed to increase spending after Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula. It’s the only ally whose spending has dropped. Source link #NATO #calls #GDP #defence #budgets #Dutch Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
