From that day onwards, at least one of that pair has featured in every single West Coast match – until last weekend. Darling’s demotion means he can’t reach the 300-game milestone this season, with the veteran sitting alongside a very familiar name on 293 AFL matches: Long-time forward-line partner Josh Kennedy. Paul Roos is the poster boy for caretaker coach success, leading Sydney to a premiership barely three years after assuming the role, but more recent history hasn’t been kind to take the reins in-season. Jarrad Schofield is the 20th AFL caretaker since 2011, with just three going on to earn the full-time job after season’s end: Rhyce Shaw (North Melbourne), David Teague (Carlton) and Brett Ratten (St Kilda). Ratten’s stint was the longest and most successful of that group, with his 66 games including a finals victory. Premium Subscribers with digital access can view this article. Already a subscriber?
