Panthers keen to rebound as in-form Mines Rovers continue to dominate GFLW ranks

Railways coach Cory Jones has backed his forwards to rebound strongly against Mines Rovers on Saturday in the Goldfields Football League women’s second semifinal as the squad chases a third consecutive grand final appearance.

They were held goalless amid challenging conditions last weekend in a 22-point defeat, 3.6 (24) to 0.2 (2), against the Diorites in a dress rehearsal for this weekend’s double-chance clash at Sir Richard Moore Sports Centre.

It was Railways’ lowest score of the season and their third straight loss against the minor premiers since they battled to a round-five draw.

Jones, however, on Friday said the talent among his group was not an issue and he expected strong across-the-board efforts for vice-captain Tully Jackson’s 50th game.

“The wind was crazy (last weekend) and had a little bit to do with it (the result), but credit to Mines Rovers because they played a great brand of defensive footy,” Jones said.

“We had two scoring shots which isn’t great, but it’s something we can fix.

“We’ll sort some things out, change things up and come up with a plan to hopefully get a greater score on the board.

“They (Mines Rovers) have been the benchmark all year, have raised the standard again and are very well led by a couple of ******.

“But we’ve got talent there as well and we’re up for the challenge.”

Chanelle Halligan, Kolbe Burgoyne and Niamh Daly each kicked a goal for Mines Rovers.

Halligan led the overall goal kicking standings with 43 from Railways’ duo Marley Kelman (35) and Drew Epis (34) and Kalgoorlie’s Wiebke Piringer (31).

Mines Rovers lost the season-opener against Boulder but since the round-five draw have strung together 12 consecutive victories.

Also last weekend, Boulder finished the qualifiers with a decisive win against Kambalda, 8.12 (60) to 0.0 (0).

The Tigers finished third with nine wins and this Sunday play defending premiers Kalgoorlie in the first semifinal.

GFLW draw:

Saturday 9am; second semifinal at Sir Richard Moore Sports Centre: Mines Rovers v Railways.

Sunday 4.30pm; first semifinal at Digger Daws Oval: Boulder v Kalgoorlie.

Final ladder:

Mines Rovers 58; Railways 50; Boulder 36; Kalgoorlie 16; Kambalda 0.
