****** ‘not worried’ about any arrest on Mongolia visit

Russian President Vladimir ****** plans to travel abroad despite an arrest warrant issued by the International ********* Court for alleged war ******* in Ukraine.

****** is due to visit Mongolia on Tuesday.

Russia’s neighbour recognises the court’s authority and so is technically bound to honour the arrest warrant issued in March 2023.

The warrant obliges the court’s 124 member countries, including Mongolia, to arrest ****** and transfer him to The Hague for trial if he sets foot on their territory.

But ******’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the threat of arrest, saying on Friday: “We are not worried. We maintain a wonderful dialogue with our friends in Mongolia.”

This will be ******’s first trip to an ICC member state since Russia launched its all-out war against Ukraine in February 2022.

He skipped a meeting of BRICS countries in South ******* last year, for instance.

Peskov answered in the affirmative when asked whether the arrest warrant had been an issue when preparing for the trip to Mongolia.

“Of course, all aspects of the visit were meticulously prepared,” he said, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.

The Kremlin said ****** is travelling to the country at the invitation of Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh in order to expand co-operation.

Mongolia has sought a good relationship with its powerful neighbours China and Russia while also maintaining ties to the ******* States and ********* countries.

Because Mongolia is economically dependent on Russia, it is considered unlikely that the country would risk relations by arresting ******.

The ICC accuses ****** of being responsible for the abduction and deportation of children and minors from Russian-occupied territories in Ukraine to Russia.

Russia refers to the incidents as relocations and has dismissed the accusation as politically motivated.

Ukrainian officials urged Mongolia to arrest ****** when he visits.

“We call on the Mongolian authorities to comply with the mandatory international arrest warrant and transfer ****** to the International ********* Court in the Hague,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Telegram.
