Upcoming Korean Action Adventure Game Crimson Desert Has a Release Window and Will Be Next-gen Only

The Witcher 3 has set a high bar for open-world action RPGs, with its gripping storytelling, unforgettable characters, and sprawling, richly detailed world. Now, it seems that an upcoming game from Korean developer Pearl Abyss is looking to capture some of that same magic and take it to new heights.

Crimson Desert, the highly anticipated title that wowed audiences at The Game Awards in 2020, is back in the spotlight with new footage from Gamescom 2024, and the hype is reaching a boiling point.

A Blend of The Witcher and Dragon’s Dogma

One of the most intriguing aspects of Crimson Desert is how it seems to be drawing inspiration from two of the most beloved action RPGs in recent memory: The Witcher 3 and Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Fans are already expressing their enthusiasm for the game, with many saying they can’t wait to get their hands on it. The fact that Crimson Desert will be a next-gen-only title, not limited by the likes of PS4 or Xbox One hardware, only adds to the anticipation.

But The Witcher and Dragon’s Dogma aren’t the only games that seem to have influenced Pearl Abyss‘ upcoming game. Eagle-eyed fans will notice that the game even seems to have a touch of Zelda in it as well.

shown at last year’s Gamescom, we see the protagonist leaping off a floating island that bears a striking resemblance to the Sky Islands from Tears of the Kingdom.

The seamless transition from skydiving to landing on the ground below is also very reminiscent of Link’s aerial adventures in Nintendo’s 2023 smash hit.

Now, while some may argue that Crimson Desert isn’t being entirely original by borrowing elements from other games, there’s something to be said for a title that can successfully blend the best parts of multiple beloved franchises. If Pearl Abyss can successfully pull it off, they could have a true classic on their hands.

With a tentative release window of Spring 2025, there’s still a lot we don’t know about Crimson Desert. But based on what we’ve seen so far, it’s shaping up to be one of the most exciting and ambitious action RPGs in recent memory.
