Vehicle rolls 30 feet down Colorado National Monument

) — Around 8:00 in the evening on Sunday, a car coming down the east side of the Colorado National Monument towards Grand Junction drove straight through a turn and off the side of a hill near Cold Shivers Viewpoint.

The car tumbled 30 feet down the hill before coming to a stop.

Colorado National Monument Public Affairs Specialist Kaitlyn Thomas tells WesternSlopeNow authorities were on scene in just a few minutes and the car was towed out shortly after. National Parks Service led the effort.

Three of the four passengers in the vehicle were raced to the hospital. Injuries are still unknown.

All that ******** at the scene Tuesday are skid marks and several small pieces of the car, including some cans and even an action figure. Thomas says crews will come out in the near future for the final cleanup.

But what was the cause? Distracted driving? Drowsiness? Wildlife? Officials are still investigating.

Stephan and Claudia Groeger traveled all the way from Germany to enjoy the monument’s views this Tuesday.

WesternSlopeNow asked them what they thought of the road – Claudia said it was relatively easy for her to navigate if you stuck to the speed limit and paid attention to your surroundings. When WesternSlopeNow told them the news, she was not surprised an accident like this could occur.

Several of the steep drops do have guardrails, but should officials now think about putting one on this curve too?

Thomas tells WesternSlopeNow the Colorado National Monument is already currently going under a guardrail analysis and road safety study right now.

Just those few crucial seconds changed the trajectory of all four peoples’ lives, and if the drop was off anything higher, it could’ve ended them. Remember…behind the wheel, every second counts.
