In a letter, Paul Givan acknowledged the difficulty children from an ******* ********* background might face in returning to school

The Education Minister Paul Givan has responded to a letter from over 400 ******* women from across Northern Ireland, who are worried about their children going back to school.

In the letter, the minister acknowledged that “recent events may make it more difficult for children from ******* ********* communities” to be happy, learning and succeeding at school.

The ******* Mothers Collective wrote to minister to say they are “deeply concerned” about the recent disorder in Belfast which saw many ******* ********* owned businesses attacked.

A number of people, including under 18s, have since been charged.

The recent disorder in Belfast saw many ******* ********* owned businesses attacked

“The intensity of recent events has truly shocked us”, the ******* Mothers Collective wrote in a letter to the education minister.

“With schools set to reopen in just a few weeks, we are concerned about the ongoing impact on our children.

“Many of those involved in recent attacks and protests are very young, and some will be returning to school alongside our children. We don’t want them to ***** our hate each other”, the letter said.

They added that mothers now “constantly worry” about whether it is safe to go out with their children.

They requested “strong assurances” their children will be safe when they return to school, and that schools take “proactive measures to prevent ******* and Islamophobic bullying”.

In response, the Education Minister Paul Givan said his department is involved with the Education Authority (EA) carrying out “risk assessments on a number of schools located close to recent unrest and protests”.

He added they were liaising with principals to “identify those schools that may be vulnerable dependent on location, school cohort (i.e high numbers of newcomers) and nature of building.

“Where necessary, maintenance work will be prioritised as well as guidance provided on managing emergency incidents.”

The minister also said officials were engaging with Translink to “reinforce transport guidance and the need for reasonable adjustments for potentially vulnerable pupils.”

Mr Givan said he hopes his response would assure the ******* Mothers Collective that the department will ensure schools are “safe for all children within our community, irrespective of race or religion” and added he would be happy to meet with them to discuss their concerns.
