Bush Summit tackling regional issues set for Port Hedland

A group of senior mining and agriculture executives and community leaders will visit Port Hedland on August 30 as part of the National Bush Summit Campaign tour to address issues plaguing regional Australians uncovered by a new survey.

The Mood of the Bush survey found two of the biggest concerns for regional Australians were the cost of living and housing affordability.

As the mining and energy sectors continue to expand in the Pilbara region, the growing population has led to housing shortages and increased rents.

The average rental price across Port Hedland is $1000 per week, nearly double the medium rent across regional WA at $544.

Rents have also increased 20 per cent in Port Hedland and 36 per cent in South Hedland since 2020.

Council approval for nine buildings to address housing shortages was given between June 2022 and April 2023, but the issue ******** ongoing.

Chamber of Minerals and Energy of WA CEO Rebecca Tomkinson, who will be a speaker at the Port Hedland summit, said the energy industry was cognisant of providing living options for regional workers.

“The WA resources sector recognises the value of a local workforce and that means helping people and families live and work in regional centres,” she said.

“CME has urged the State Government to revisit its housing strategy so that housing releases are brought forward in areas of highest demand, including regional locations.”

She said industry leaders had “hammered home” to the Federal Government that incentives were needed for employees to permanently live in regional locations.

Ms Tomkinson and other speakers will address the interface between resource companies based in the Pilbara and housing affordability and options for the region’s residents, as well as other concerns raised in the survey by Australians living remotely.
